Many years ago, fancied a BMW Z8.

BMW Could not sell them for the £80,000 list, selling for £50,000. Used were around £30,000 but funds were limited back then.

Collectors items now fetching £150,000 - £250,0000

I so agree. Wonderful cars and have gone up beyond what is logical IMHO.
On a different level have you seen how much porsche 928 s are going for now.

The agent came round one day with a bloke in a suit and said,,, if any of you are interested in buying a place here, this bloke will help you sort it,,,, we all looked at him, laughed and said, who the Soddin hell will want a house here,, it's a hole,, bloody freezing near the water!!! ( December) you got to be a mug to pay that round here!!!!

The sum of 75,000 was mentioned!!

Another fantastic decision made by me!!!!

If anyone is interested in a banger that will give a Bugatti Veyron a run for its money, this road legal beast is now for sale. £14k will buy it, but please bring clean underwear as it is a sub 10 second standing start car.

I bought a 1952 Mercedes 170 Deisel Sport for 2 shillings and 6 pence when I was stationed near Bergen Belsen in 1966 ( you had to have a bill of sale, hence the cost )
I sold it on to a mate for the same "vast fortune" when I was posted.
They are now in 100's of thousands.
Very shrewd.

Interestingly there is a roadtest of a z8 Alpina by a much younger Clarkson on You tube where he's saying that the original car wasn't very good and the Alpina one isnt any better. His words are 'trying to get it round a corner is like trying to get a wardrobe up a fire escape.

In the early '70s I remember a Ferrari Daytona 365 GTB Berlinetta for sale for £2000. One of my university lecturers owned one, they were so cheap used. A bargain today at a mere £500,000 - £750,000.

I didn't have the money then (as a student) nor do I have it today, so it is still a dream car until that Euromillions jackpot lands in my bank account.

Sold mine last year as I get fed up with cars and am always changing as soon as I sold it I regretted it as it was a one owner 20k miles and never had a mark on it.


One of only two cars I have owned that I never lost money on!!
