I heartily agree! Although, I do have a cassette loo.

Just reading through the threads on here yesterday made my eyes bleed and I feel quite sad for those who have paid a fortune for a vehicle that seems to have one problem after another and requires a computer, a large wallet and three days with a trained counsellor to get to the bottom of it.

My van is thirty years old and it cost me
£3700 and everything inside and outside works. I had a full service here yesterday in Vila Do Bispo at the Bosch garage and it cost me €104. That'll do for me!

The problem is only partly complexity. For some reason over the last two or three decades everyone has off-loaded responsibility to 'experts'. No-one knows how anything works, no-one wants to know how anything works, no-one does anything themselves, so the smallest problems are perceived as big ones and large amounts of cash are involved. With honourable exceptions to very general comments of course.

part of this is due to the closed shop mentallity the onboard computer throws up fault codes that can only be read by another computer which is only available to specialists when the onboard computer is capable of being programed to send the same message in plain text

But if you say anything they come up with any excuse why their dealer is very good at fixing things, I got abused yesterday for just saying on another thread, that the damn things shouldn't go wrong in the first place when they have cost 50 grand(n)(n)

Or this?

Modern vehicles are much much better to drive. In reality they go wrong so much less then the old stuff. They return MPG van owners could only dream of not so long ago.

Of course they can suffer from things like emmisions equipment items DPFs and so on but much of this is avoided by feeding them quality diesel not the cheap basic stuff that costs a few pennies less.

The tool chest may have grown a bit with things like in my case a high quality comprehensive Code Reader. There is nothing I cannot detect or cure on our vehicles in fact with the diagnostics it's easier to go to the problem !!

We have to move with the times and for me all the things @JJ is pleased not to have I'm chuffed to have on our van.

Plus I don't have to hook a bucket on the back to collect the horse droppings. Mind you JJ has prize winning roses !!!!

JJ stop moaning yer miserable bugger !!

Just pullin yer leg :ROFLMAO:

Lol... Mr Charlie.

No way was I moaning!

I have lived in my 1987 Hymer 660 for years now.

I delight at the simplicity of all its equipment and the fact that it all works.

I service the fridge myself.

I service the heating system myself.

I service the air cooling gizmo myself.

And so on and so forth.

It is a joy, an absolute joy, not to have to rely on some garage with a computer to "diagnose" what (might) have gone wrong.

And there is no way what so ever that anyone on this forum, or any other one for that matter, enjoys their motorhome more than I do mine.

Moan?

Moi?

Jamais!

(Now get busy detailing young man, and stop wasting your time on this thread.)

JJ

PS. There is absolutely no reason at all that "we have to move with the times".

Pure codswallop.

I think you missed the bottom line where I said I was just pullin yer leg ...

In time we will move forward. We have too cos nothing lasts forever ?? At this time anyone choosing to buy a late or new MH or car will buy into the computer generation by default.

So many seem convinced they are at the dealers mercy and only they can plug in and diagnose ! This is simply not the case. My equipment cost under 500 quid and I have not yet been unable to diagnose. I have even found faults dealer hardware has failed to reveal.

Now get busy feeding the horses young man you may have a road trip soon !!!

Just having a giggle .................

Having started out twenty years ago with a 22 year old VW Kombi, I've just bought a new MH that needs a braked trailer for carrying all the gadget manuals and a Space Shuttle pilot's licence to understand them.

However I reckon I'll give the new one and all its gadgets a fair crack before declaring myself a Luddite and going back to the Kombi :)
