I was wondering what to do about the Tesco vouchers that were due to expire at the end of this month and got a nice surprise to find out that they have automatically been extended so now don't expire until 31/5/2021.

Just thought others might like to know so they don't 'waste' the vouchers by spending them at face value if they want to exchange them instead for 3x their value in the future (eg ferry crossings, eurotunnel etc).

Thanks for the info, Mel.

I had some due to expire last January so I used them for tickets to a local attraction to be used within 6 months. This has also been extended.

Thanks for that.

I don't want a Club card. Ever since Tesco has recently started charging silly prices for those without a Club card to encourage customers to get one I've been going to Lidl and Waitrose. Both equally convenient for me.

No-one is making you have one but it does have benefits as you get points which convert to vouchers which you can then exchange at 3 times their face value and can really save you a lot of dosh, we've used them for ferries to France and Ireland plus Eurotunnel, joining English Heritage and the like etc in the past. Now we rarely go to Tesco since the first lockdown as we have a new Aldi in our village thus go there or to Lidl a bit further away, so our points total for this year have been a lot less but we've got plenty 'in the pot' already, certainly enough for at least 2 return trips to Ireland.

I realise that the savings might be worthwhile for a family shop but I shop only for one and tbh I can't be bothered to faff about with the vouchers. It amuses me at the checkout when some folk hand the cashier a collection of dog-eared vouchers having no idea whether they've bought any of the qualifying products.
Three times face value sounds good for the tunnel but I don't use the tunnel and they're not accepted by DFDS for crossings (remember them?) from Newhaven, just 20 miles from home (but I do get a 20% discount from DFDS for being over 60 yrs old).
I used to save Green Shield stamps :giggle:.

I remember those

My late parents collected these too, i remember as a child drooling through the accompanying catalogue at the items they could be redeemed for.

Embassy cigarette :Eeek: coupons as well.
I think I got a tennis racket.

I remember my mum collecting stamps from Brooke Bond tea. After what seemed forever you got 10 shillings.

I use Tesco and Tesco Credit card for everything, not for the vouchers but cos' I hate shopping and it's my nearest shop and I go once and get evrything - all down to personal choice, tried Aldi / Lidl once - couldn't find what I wanted and brand named goods were similar price or more anyway !!

I use a Tesco credit card & pay it off every month, so no interest & vouchers for the tunnel - win, win! Also remember green shield stamps (I had to stick them in the books!) & Embassy cigarette coupons, of which we got a lot, as my dad was a chain smoker! 😬

I get a free return tunnel ticket from tesco vouchers every year

Us too. At least one. Plus it's my nearest store and I only need use the van once a week for a big shop, so I save on transport and get the exercise I need. (Lockdown permitting). And also find their prices very good. The next nearest stores are Waitrose (dearer and height barrier), and Lidl, where there are some good buys.

You can use your Clubcard vouchers for other operators and it's not just travel as there are other things on offer too. The vouchers you're talking about for the checkout are coupons off specific things which aren't the same.

Its surprising how much you can tot up without realising it especially if you use their credit card for paying for stuff at Tesco and elsewhere. We don't go out of our way to use Tesco but if we need something and we're nearby its no different to going to another supermarket.

They are a lot better than they used to be and the prices on brand name stuff is generally the same now as in major supermarkets (except if their on offer of course). We do most of our shopping at Lidl/Aldi and only go to the major supermarkets if there's something specific we need and can't get otherwise but this isn't very often. Hubby likes shopping fortunately so he does it ... he likes finding 'bargains' in the discount areas and comes home with loads of stuff which get stocks up the freezer which means he has to actually shop less. He discovered that the local Co-op reduced stuff on a Sunday lunchtime so times it so that after he's taken the dogs out for a walk he can pop in on his way back home (in the car) to see what's there ... some of the stuff he's got is great, often reduced to around 10% of the original price, it was a godsend when we had to feed Romy with anything she would eat as they often had mince meat vastly reduced so hubby made her stews which she loved.

Oh dear. I feel very much behind the times with my twenty quid PAYG Tesco basic phone which does everything I need and not having a credit card. My lads tell me I should get an iPhone (Smartphone?) and also a credit card as it will provide more protection than my debit cards but I CBA'd.
I like Waitrose for my Craster kippers and Lidl for the eclectic foods (and the must-have Boys' Toys in the centre aisle ;) ).

You could be missing a trick ... you can use some of your Tesco vouchers against your Tesco phone bills I believe (2 x face value) ... I haven't checked whether it includes PAYG but might do.

For some odd reason we have 2 lidls in our small town , a really big one 200 yard's from us , we use it occasionally, but, we find some of the quality of their products not good .

It depends on the product, we find that Lidl's carrots aren't as good as Aldi's quality wise and don't keep as long either. They both have their 'own make' ranges and these can vary too, some of the basic ranges are okay but for other stuff, such as custard, it's better to pay a little bit more to get a better product, same as mainstream supermarkets really. We like Lidl's large tubs of plain probiotic yoghurt but aren't as keen on Aldi's version.

Thanks for the info Mindy Girl.

Remember sticking them on the card, and exchanging the card for gifts. Our nearest GC shop was in Cambridge, came in really useful for Christmas presents. Think we got most stamps for buying petrol at the extortionate price of 6 bob (30p) per gallon (4.5ltrs). Where's the last 50 years gone.

Sorry, did’nt check the bl—-y word speller.

We've been Tesco CC holders for years now, but we don't shop there, unless it's for the odd couple of items, otherwise it's Aldi first, then Morrisons and Lidl, in that order on the way home. ;)

We do however use the Tesco CC for all purchases made here in the UK, and that's how we build up points for travel. Before the Frequent Traveller facility on the Tunnel, Tesco vouchers paid for our ferry crossings, and in 2019, they mostly paid for our return crossing to Ireland, whereupon we had to add a few quid to make up the difference.

Cheers,

Jock. :)

Talking of Green Shield stamps, and Embassy cigarette coupons.

Anybody remember Kensitas cigs. They gave coupons as well. M and D had a shop and we did well from the Rep. that came in to take an order and they got 'Trade only' bulk buying coupons. Can't remember what they got.

My sister and BIL smoked Kensitas and said they were saving up the coupons for the iron lung.

Not sure but think OH TinaL swaps out the tunnel vouchers near use by date & puts them in the Tesco Xmas club savings account, then switches them back out into vouchers. We only have about 50/60 quid's worth at present, as we dont use or like Tesco's that much, (Their Irish Beef especially, tough as an old boot) but at least we dont lose out by letting the vouchers meet their expiry date.
I once asked on another forum how a few regulars could amass so many Tesco Vouchers to enable them to use the Chunnel 4 times a year, answer was revealing, they had Tesco everything, weekly food shop, Credit Cards, Bank accounts, insurances ,mobile phones, even their mortgage, plus they used Tesco Direct for everything they bought for the house.
Collecting points is one thing, but at what cost?
