I'm a newbie
With the satellite foot print getting smaller and smaller what is the best item to get to get tv coverage as I have just purchased a new motorhome and I am looking for advice as I had the oyster system on my last van and was struggling with signal in south of France I was thinking about getting a smart tv and using wifi .thanks

We used our iPad/iPhone and Virgin mobile unlimited data in France this year. The Apple HDMI adapter transferred everything from the iPad onto the Avtex TV.

We’re able to watch everything we would watch at home on our Virgin package.

For some reason the Adaptor wouldn’t transfer Sky/BT Sports onto the telly, so His Nibs had to watch the footie on the iPad.

Worked for us. (y)

We do just that. Smart TV, firestick and chrome cast. Films on USB hard drive. Certainly less intrusive than a sat dish on the van. You can always fit a dish later.

We're discussing the merits of wifi v Satellite in this thread.

Just for simplicity I've gone with wifi streaming but we won't be watching much TV so will stay as light users

You can get an awful lot of data for the price of a satellite system.
I guess it depends on where you intend to tour but we’ve found that there is excellent 4G coverage over most of France via Vodafone, a bit more patchy in the U.K. I think.
Once you reach Toulouse you will be on the edge of most Satellite coverage for UK channel.

Firestick in the tv with extra apps loaded so you get sky, virgin or anything else. stream via my phone with unlimited data from vodafone or the mifi on three with a mimo aerial on the roof. it works perfectly

Toe toe which Oyster system variant did you have on your last van?? To view the free to air UK TV signals in that area you would require an 85cm dish and in the southernmost areas you would probably also need to alter the skew angle of the system although the 85cm also has an autosew variant to do this for you.
With regards to the footprint shrinking I have to say that is not true at all.
The footprint for the UK spot beam did indeed change when the Astra 2 satellite network was replaced over the course of 2012-2014 however it has not changed since then.

Clarky that's a very misleading comment. If you are going to compare 4G to Satellite coverage then please either refrain from using specific locations when you are not in full possession of the facts regarding the signal coverage or be a little more specific with what size systems will cover the noted area. It's very misleading to other people reading this thread when an Oyster 85cm Skew system will happily cover a good 50 miles south of Toulouse for ITV/BBC and on the same system the Astra 2 European beam will give coverage down to Northern Morocco.

Hi Anthony we had your oyster system with the 85 cm dish we were down in Perpignan and gave you guys a call who talked me through and reset the the settings but could not get the dish to lock on so had no tv we tried it again on our way home nr macron and the system work perfectly well and worked well all the way back.i would just like to say the help I received from your company was absolutely brilliant and the lady who when through the settings was so patient so a big thank you .but we are going to to be traveling further south in the new motorhome and was wondering which way to go to get tv as we will be going for 3 moths at a time .

There are ways to get the satellite system to give you signal further afield however not strictly legal. If the Oyster system you have is a Vision III then it should be programmed to be able to lock on to a Satellite called Intelsat 907 which transmits backup services for the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and channel 5. The services are encrypted and strictly speaking you are not supposed to view them however a lot of people do using a receiver capable of decoding the encryption (Ice Crypt is one). The only problem with this option right now is that the satellite broadcasting the signal is coming to the end of it's life span and due to be replaced early next year meaning we don't know whether the services will still be available and, if so, where too when it is. I'm monitoring what's going to happen as closely as I can but Satandpcguy is the guy in the know so it's worth keeping an eye out for his posts on the subject or check out his website which is quite useful.
