We're heading up to Harrogate tomorrow evening for the TDF and know that the traffic will be a nightmare. Any suggestions for routes getting off the A1 into Harrogate? We normally go past the Yorkshire Showground but it will be gridlocked around there (I guess) based on the number of people camping. Would the Knaresborough road be slightly less busy than the Wetherby road to get to the Stray (close to where our family live).

Cheers

The traffic light staggered junction in Knaresborough can get very busy. I think you can expect delays whichever route you choose.

I'm expecting that we would be coming off the A1 around 7:00 and then arriving in Harrogate about 11pm??? :(

As per previous post I reckon it will be pretty busy whichever way you go.

The full road closure list for the area is Broken Link Removed, some already in place, so that might influence your decision.

Glad we're avoiding it ! Might have to choose a different route to Skipton (other than the A59!)

The way I would go to Skipton is down the A19/A168 to Dishforth then A1 north to A61, past Ripon and cut off to the A59 on the B6161 at Killinghall. Avoids Harrogate town centre and minor roads.

We're hoping to arrive on Friday evening - well, we will be leaving home on Friday afternoon, driving up the A1 and hoping that we can get into Harrogate before the lock down.

Google maps indicated static traffic around the show ground on the route that I had put in but it gave an alternative road which looked clearer. Fingers crossed for a good journey :)

Busy YES gridlocked NO just been in and out today by bus. Some roads will be closed on Saturday for the race to go through but my understanding is it will only be the ones directly on the route, as suggested the closures are on the Tour web site.

None of the roads we need to take will be closed for the race (and we hope to get into Harrogate a long time before 4am) but as we will only be staying a couple of hundred meters from The Stray, it will be busy. I'm thinking of coming off the Wetherby Rd at Spofforth and coming in via the Leeds Rd. That would avoid going past the show ground.

We sailed into Harrogate this evening - the roads are very clear - it seems as though people are hankering down.

Since 2009 with motorhomes several caravans then tents before that.
I know , it will be a nightmare.
My sat nav took me to my sainsburys that I was promoting in today, in moortown leeds From Wakefield.
I got lost in chappletown, eek! Another story.

There were signs along the last leg, saying this road will be closed etc etc.
The store took well over budget today and yesterday. It's like Xmas for goodness sake.
I guess people won't be venturing out tomorrow.
On the plus side. People have made an effort and yellowed up their neighbourhood

Hi

Pleased you got to your destination without problem, we were out around the area today even going through Harrogate and all seemed to be moving OK.

Should be busy tomorrow but it's only one day, some businesses that have nothing to gain by being open are taking the day off.

Well I for one am sitting at home watching it on tv feeling really proud at the turnout and the way people have made an effort to welcome the tdf.

All too often events are London based and I think Yorkshire has done us proud, perhaps the government might take notice (I'll not hold my breath tho')

Dont say that. The roads are bad enough as it is in Tight Wad Land, without enforced closures.

Ooo not as bad as Devon though, got a bit worrying when the hedges were touching both sides of the landrover at the same time, the roads on tv look like dual carriageway in comprison :)

The riders and their employers.
Judging from the crowds, there will be a lot of people that have made a tidy sum this weekend and not just the riders and employers - the local economies are set to make millions from this event and the legacy is likely to last a long time.

I think GJH meant the monies coming from tax-deductible companies, local authorities, central government, and going into the pockets of the riders and the organisers???

I was thinking of the local people who must have made quite a lot this weekend.
No doubt there will be a significant number but they are balanced by people who suffer costs. For instance, a cousin of mine needs to travel from Glossop to Sunderland tomorrow. Glossop will suffer significant travel problems and the normal route over the A628 is completely closed so they have had to make arrangements to stay with a relative tonight so that they can travel via the M6/A66 tomorrow.
Other people I know have also told me of similar problems they will be caused so no doubt many more of the 32,000 residents will be similarly affected - and that is only one town 7 miles from the nearest view point. Thanks goodness we were called to an urgent meeting there 4 weeks ago and not tomorrow.
