I've read several threads on the potential risks of using fresh water taps on sites and the worry of it having been contaminated by a previous visitor ... I wondered if any of you folks have a method for cleaning taps, like a magic sponge that you wipe the tap with before attaching your hose or filling your can? I've never seen it mentioned but it sounds like a good thing to do.

not long enough
If a tap has a length of hose attached we always disconnect and use our own where possible

always use our own hozelock fitting where we can

but we never drink the water anyway, bottled water is too cheap to risk issues with drinking water, especially on the continent

I have seen others use anti bac type kitchen wipes

a couple of capfulls of liquid bleach in a spray bottle, topped up with water. spray this on the tap and spout to kill bacteria then run the tap 30 seconds to flush

Long term a few years now.
Its common sense , remove any fittings use your own first off .If in any doubt do as Thebig1 says and then run the tap. If too worried get water elsewhere, and dont worry or make it a problem (y)

let all tap water run first ,legionella bacteria starts to grow when the temp gets above 20 deg c ,the bacteria is present in all water (its killed at 70 deg c) ,there are 250 to 300 cases of legionaires disease per year in the UK , allowing even bottled water to get warm is not a good idea ,legionellas optimum temp for growth is 37 deg (body temperature).

Since 2008 & many years tugging
Always disconnect any hose on the tap and use my own and run the tap for a bit. If it looks really dodgy find somewhere else to fill up, only needed to do that once.

Woosies...

Give your anti-bodies some exercise.

Get them fit by drawing water after your campsite neighbour has rinsed his cassette with the tap.

250 to 300 people out of 60,000,000 catch Legionaires Disease every year... does that mean 59,999,700 people don't?

Run the tap for a while after removing any hoses on it already, then spray it with anti-bacterial spray, both outside and inside, then wipe with a baby-wipe, run a little again then fill up. Make sure you get as much water out of your hose as you can when putting it away.
