Hi all,

I am contemplating buying a tag axle motorhome what if any are the drawbacks apart from more tyres to renew.

The only drawback that we have found is sometimes it's a bit of a squeeze around tight bends in small quaint towns but the advantages outweigh the cons in my eyes.

I,ve never driven a tag.....
With the ability to carry so much weight at rear of van is traction compromised with front wheel drive? Hill starts, wet grass etc.
Would a rear wheel drive twin wheel setup be better?
Far fewer models to choose from though.

Go for it, you won’t regret it. The no tag rule on the odd campsite is mainly aimed at caravans, because of the you know who. The pro’s outway the cons everyday. We are travelling down through Spain at the moment trying to stick at 60mph and getting 25mpg. Fully loaded at 5 ton. When we get to where we’re going we have lots of space to chill out. Ok some campsites are a bit tight in Spain. But never had a problem in the UK, just a bit of planning before hand.

On our fourth tag now we love the space and I like the Fiat 3.0 we only got stuck once in a Autotrail Chieftan but so did everyone else never been stuck with our A class in 6 years but there has got to be an element of common sense.

A possible advantage is that with rear weight spread over twice as many tyres there should be less sinking in at the rear for the front to pull out of a soft surface. Says the person considering a tag axle as his next van :D.

And anyway they aren't tag axles :imoutahere:

Had a Tag never had any problems as others have said 24+ to the gallon nice and stable on the road even without air suspension.

Been motorhoming for 15yrs.had an American RV for 7yrs,Now got a Niesmann Bischoff Arto 88F
We have a tag axle N&B and absolutely love it.Love the extra space ,love the large payload, never been refused on a site .My advice to you is if it’s what you want then go for it and enjoy
