My new to me autotrail tracker has a switch fitted by the previous owner to switch the panel to charge either the hab battery or the vehicle battery mounted on the dash, I’ve never come across this before .is it a good idea? Previous owner used to lay the van up for long periods any ideas?

A regulator that can be set to charge both batteries is better but that idea would work. Generally when the motorhome is in use you want most of the charge to go to the leisure battery but when stored the vehicle battery is supplying alarm, remote locking, tracker etc while the leisure battery is doing nothing.

Only issue I can see if you got different batteries for starter and hab ie lead starter and lithium hab.
You would have to change settings on controller every time you change batteries
However a duo charger usually only trickle charges starter battery so it is not a problem if you have lithium setting for hab battery.
