I’ve just bought a 2009 Kon Tiki 679 with 8000 miles on the clock and very pleased with it.

Am going to install some solar panels and roof mounted air con (probably truma)

Is it worth upgrading to Truma INet to run the air con and heating? I need to purchase upgraded controls and the inet box?

Anyone who has done this or has experience please let me know if it was worthwhile.

I think you made need to add a control board to your truma boiler as older ones wont work with truma I net.

Why do you want roof-mounted air-con? They are a seriously heavy item and although the Kon-Tiki is not known for having weight problems, I wonder if it is worth the expense?

We have an air-con unit on the roof, came with the van, but because it has to be on a hookup to use it I can count on the fingers of one foot how often we've used it "in anger". IMO far better to use a roof-light mounted 12v ventilator which can either be set to extract as well as provide cooling, albeit at the outside temperature of course. It's the airflow rather than the temperature that seems to have the most cooling effect.

Some folk simply do not like the heat & I'm one of them, air con is becoming a must have for folks like me & my other half.
I haven't installed a system for a very long time but, here is a photo of our Dometic system on our Bessacarr, remember too that these units can be used for heating too.

Genuinely interested in this thread as we spend a lot of time in hot climates.

I have read threads that suggest roof mounted units are “too noisy” during the night to enable sleep. Add this to the weight increase, no ability to use off EHU, do they really make sense?

We have the iNet in our van, and the only time I’ve ever used it is if I’m too lazy to get out of bed to switch the heating on! Never had cause to use it away from the van when away, and at home the main panel is switched off, so the heating wouldn’t work anyway! I think it’s an expensive gimmick, but others may think differently! ?

It all depends on your way of living. We spend most of our time off-grid so the aircon unit is just so much unusable payload - we have used it a couple of times but in all honesty a 12v fan system would probably been just as effective. We bought an Endless Breeze unit a couple of years ago and that sees more use. If ever we change vans I wouldn't be buying aircon (still appreciate the cab aircon though).

I have a later 669, we did consider the purchase of fitting an air con unit. Our after sales told me that they had fitted a couple but they were not very successful. I purchased a 10” Cooling fan from Screwfix at £9.50, It works well on EHU and as it only consumes 40 watts I can use it with the Inverter we have .

I’m not sure if one of these roof fans might fit the bill as an alternative via the excellent YouTube channel of Greg Virgo:
