I often wonder when in Spain passing certain supermarkets i've counted as many as thirty motorhomes in parked up some not just overnighters as many are there for a week or much longer.I can understand the point of saving money while on holiday but there are better places to stay. Must be something I'm missing. Don't no what it is but no doubt someone has a good answer.

There is a fine line, between a little opportunist "wild camping", cheap camping at a place that welcomes your prescence, and just emulating the reviled Itinerant. Where the lne is drawn, I'm not sure, but as you say, a supermarket car park is not the destination i had in mind when spending a fortune on a motorhome.

Given the rate of unemployment in Spain you'd have to wonder whether some of those motorhomes are second homes or only homes.

I personally wouldn't rule out a French supermarket car park if the nearby aire was full but we haven't had to do it yet. Good to know they're available though - unlike in this country.

All people that you see in motorhomes and caravans are not on holiday. I believe some do not have homes and some, strangely enough may even be working in the area.

I think you are making excuses for what are just cheap skate free loaders who only understand hight barriers numberplate recognition and width restrictions. Problem is all motorhomers suffer the consiquenses of the few.

I'll remember that remark next time we go to France in the middle of the night and spend a couple of hours sleeping on Auchan at St Martin Boulogne before properly setting off on our adventure next day.

I spose 'stocking up' the next morning in the shop doesn't count ......

Supermarket carparks

Hi Teepee, on our way out to Morocco and back in Sept and November we saw lots of vans in supermarket car parks, though mostly in France. It really surprised us to see high-end vans parked like this, even though some aires are actually in such places. Happy to use aires, but personally, like some other members, the thought of stepping out amongst loads of moving vehicles/people hardly appeals. We bought the van to escape that! I appreciate though, that for some, needs must when the devil drives (though I usually try to keep Sue in the passenger seat!). Don't tell her I said that!
