Wonder if anyone has a good recommendation?
Camp Site or wild we don't mind. Given a choice we like being able to leave the van and walk into a village or little community with the dog.
Also preferably somewhere not involving hugely steep narrow roads! We got rather stung in Tuscany. Stayed at an enchanting high level village Casciane in murlo but it was almost impossible to get out. Sat nav went mad! Our van is 7foot 4" wide and I swear it took us through a steep walled alley of 7'4.5" ! We had to put both mirrors in and hubby walked behind encouraging me on the walky talky!
In the end we actually had to ask a car to lead us out! It has made us a bit nervous now....

Don't really know but Montecassino has cropped up many times, do a search on it.

Our stop would be Pompeii or Sorrento. If open of course. Not your request but just down the road from Rome.

Getting Better
Hi Jac,
Can't help with your inquiry but saw the news earlier and that area is having a bit of a cold spell at the moment :cold:

Actually Poland was more scary as some of the drivers were just mad on single Lane roads. I think if you drive over leisurely from the UK you just get slowly used to it all

Whats it like driving a MoHo in Italy ! ? I imagine some of it can be quite challenging. Would love to make that trip one day.

When we first went, on a bike, it was a case of "good god how do they survive", quite a long time ago. Our first visit to Naples in a hire car was a case of "we're not going to make it captain". But ten years on by MH they seemed to have calmed down a lot or maybe they show a big white lump a lot more respect. In other words, no problem.

The worst thing you can do is not go, though very very much better in late May/June or Sept.

Hi Jac
As mentioned I would really recommend a visit to Monte Cassino, it's an amazing place considering it was virtually flattened during the war then completely rebuilt. I know you mentioned you didn't want any twisty mountain roads but the tourist coaches get up there ok, and the drive up is something else with great scenery. Motorhomes are allowed to park up overnight outside the monastery with dedicated bays but no services, if you get there during the day someone comes along and collects, I seem to remember, 8euros but after 6pm there's no one there.

If you don't want to drive to the top then there's a parking area, with services, next to a pizzeria.

hope that helps

The Circumvesuviana is really convenient so if you stay somewhere along that..... Pompeii, sorrento etc, will save you some driving and is an experience in itself.

I am not going to be much help here but if you struggle there is always the fast train from Rome to Naples.

It takes just over an hour.

Thanks
I'm fine with twisty roads it's just when it's too narrow. Camping! Zeus from reviews sounds too difficult to access for a 7.5 metre van including bikes. Stopped at Ceprano which is a cute small site by a pizzeria among trees but very hard to find as the autostrada exit was closed so entailed a 25 mile circle which we did cos there was nowhere else.

We've decided to camp in Cassino (need the hook Up in this cold) and just do a day visit to Monte casino monastery. Does anyone know if the drive up ok?

Camping Zeus was fine for us as well, we are 5.5T and 9metres with the bike on the back.

I was in Zeus two years ago and found it to be be one of the scruffiest sites I'd been to. The place is an old orangery with loads of old orange trees, if you are wary of getting in tight spaces I would avoid, I wish I had.

Currently staying in Cassino at Camping Europa to visit Montecassino tomorrow.. Comfortable site walking distance to town which is always nice .
It feels very mean when every single service is charged separately and we refused Wi-Fi at 3.50 a night!! I can appreciate the negative reviews on camper contact. However the total was 21e which was normal.
Lovely scenic route to get here from Ceprano off toll road with a backdrop of snow capped mountains.
I guess we'll try the Zeus site and report back. We are often happy to compromise on site quality if it means we can access local places easily by public transport. It's not like we're on holiday where every place has to be the best due to limited time. If we stay in a grotty site to see a city then we try to pick a nice one next.
I appreciate all the help. This forum is such a find
