If you ever watched 'HEARTBEAT' on tv then the village (Goathland) is just a few miles up the road.

The pub (Goathland hotel) and shops are real.

Of course, the nth york moors railway, from pickering to whitby, has a station at Goathland so you dont even need to drive but if you did, theres a large carpark opposite the shops.

The suggestion by Techno 100 is an excellent one. The trip on the NYMR from Pickering to Whitby is fantastic but at this time of the year services are very limited.
If you do manage to get to Whitby, and you like fish and chips there are several excellent restaurants there. We went to The Magpie Restaurant, because Rick Stein had described it as the best in the country. For us it was our best chippie experience ever (and yes, we do use Ricks fish and chip restaurants in Padstow and Falmouth regularly).

Robin hoods Bay is worth a look, plenty of nice walks and a refreshing pint or two when you get to the bottom, also agree with all of the above.

Beautiful area

Whitby is not far away 21 miles .
Lots of things to do and see there . You'll find plenty places to park this time of year too.

We like staying at Hook House Farm campsite up in the hills, great views of the surrounding area and a nice walk down through the sheep fields, fairly basic but suits us, having said that haven't been this year

There's also Helmsley just along the road and Castle Howard isn't too far away.

Lovely little town Helmsley, we were there 3 years ago after failing to find anywhere to park in Pickering. Dedicated motorhome space in Cleveland Way where the buses park.

Midway between Pickering and Helmsley take the road north to Hutton-le-Hole, picture postcard village with a stream running through it and sheep everywhere, The Ryedale Folk Museum and good parking off to the right as you go north through the village.

was up there a couple of weeks ago running the Goathland marathon. Superb area, may I also suggest hutton le hole. Gorgeous little village with a museum there and you can stay on the pub car park too which does lovely food btw. Whitby as said is fantastic and my favourite UK town ever.
The railway does indeed go all the way to Whitby but speaking to one of the operators in the Aidensfield arms the other week, I was told they don't do many trains this time of year. Helmsley is nice too.

We used to stay at the cs behind the station in Pickering and liked the town for a wander, think they had a market on a Monday.

We haven't been for a year or two - is Pickering still worth a visit?

I was going to add Hutton le Hole also. Going NE from Hutton will bring you to Rosedale Abbey. The view from the top of the "Chimney" is superb. Rosedale itself is quite a nice little village but the roads are a bit narrow and I'm not sure if anything will be open this time of year. In the other direction is Thornton Dale, again another pretty village. Then south of Pickering is Malton and Eden Camp.

Thornton le Dale is a picture post card village.

Cropton has the brewery and isn't too far from Pickering. You've just missed the beer festival at the New Inn. http://www.newinncropton.co.uk

The Fox and Rabbit pub is also worth a visit for good food and ale on the road to Whitby..

The Dalby Forest has a drive through route.

Malton's worth visit on market day.

Flamingo Land if zoos and rides are your thing.

All are within striking distance of Pickering.

Leave an afternoon (at least) clear to visit Eden Camp. A wonderful conversion of a POW camp giving the story of WW2 and the camp residents.
