Just getting a new Chausson 640. I don’t really want the spare wheel in the garage and I don’t think it can be underslung. Has anyone considered putting it on the back like my old autotrail? They have provided a space for a cycle rack which I will not use if I can get two bikes in the garage.
thanks,Phill

Leave it in the garage at home and gain the weight saving for beer and wine, and let the breakdown company do there job if required. 😀😀 win win.

I have seen someone weld up a metal frame which fixes on the bike rack mountings and holds the spare wheel. I was a bit dubious about putting 30kg of spare wheel on those mountings, but guess two or three bikes would add up to about same weight.

I built a custom spare wheel holder for our Chausson which does not use the bike rack mounting as I also wanted to carry bikes on the back.

If you search on our username you should find the details.

We carry ours on the bike rack. 25kg for the wheel, about the same as two bikes.
I do want to explore an under-van carrier. We have self-levelling so getting it out might not be such a problem.

Another owner of an Autocruise Impala inherited his with the spare attached to the rear roof!! I don't fancy trying to lift that weight so high.

Hi All, thank you for all the helpful advice. I have decided to see if the spare wheel can be taken off the invoice and doing as Billy suggests. Let the breakdown people sort it. We’ve never need a spare in ten years and the payload is a problem.

I let the tyre centre that fitted 6 new tyres have it and the tyre had plenty of tread on it.
There was no way I was crawling under the van to get it if I ever needed it (do doubt in pouring rain). Can of tyre inflator and many KGs saved, its why I pay for breakdown cover.

We had a ‘long tailed’ Eldiss, brand new. Travelling through France went over a ‘sleeping gendarme’ ( not fast honestly) and the spare wheel carrier underneath broke and the wheel bounced down the road behind us narrowly missing our mates in a tugger behind us.
Ended up in dispute between dealer/manufacturer/ converter never really resolved.
Carried the bleedin thing around under the bed for ages, never used it more trouble than it was worth.
The dent in the frenchmans gate post is still there

After not carrying a spare many years ago I spent 6 days stranded in the Highlands of Scotland waiting for a new tyre to arrive from France. Never again. I've only had one puncture since and before the breakdown company attended they confirmed I had a tyre on the rim.
