I got a text message from a colleague after work yesterday with a picture of flames and black smoke rising from the 400 unit storage depot where our van is kept. On the photo our Moho with black front is in the picture right next to the fire!!!! OMG!!!!! Quick trip down to the site confirms this. 6 vans (all tuggers actually by chance) destroyed completely. Ours looks 100% ok at first glance but we’ll have it out over the weekend for a full check. Although sorned our van remains insured of course thankfully. The site is in Elland near Halifax. Seems a chap in one of the vans was putting some new Formica tops in. Obviously highly inflammable solvents in use. Kerboom. Not sure how his own insurance will look at it??
I would say this proves something about safe pitch distancing on rallies if nothing else!

Sad for the folks that lost units but I think you were lucky the wind was in the opposite direction to effect yours

think you must have had a guardian angel looking out for you, can't imagine what your feelings were driving out to the site not knowing what you were going to find there, tragic though for those who have lost theirs..

The “like” was for your lucky escape, not for the fire.

The guy whe was responsible for accidentally starting it will be feeling pretty bad now.

So a “secure” site that you pay to store your van on doesn’t have insurance cover for the sites contents?

Happy for you Marty Gilly and Pup, looks like fire brigade on it quickly, I guess because someone there and called it in.
Hymerbell , that was some fire must have been a shock for you and all the others who lost their outfits.

Moved house last year and had to put camper into storage.but was a bit unhappy that conditions were that you are not allowed to carry out any work on vehicle.now know why!,

That is one of the reasons why you should never let your insurance lapse. Even if he is insured if it is treated as accidental you might still need to claim off your own insurance, not every accident is treated as negligence.

OMG! How awful for all owners who least expected to lose their vans. Hope the man who unfortunately was working on his van is ok. In your photo our friends house is in the background.

Oh what a shock. So lucky the wind was going in the opposite direction to your mh.

Really hope nobody was hurt.. other than financially?

Please keep us informed once you know what is happening.

Hug.

all storage sites are at your risk
As I discovered during February storm Chiara when the contents of an overloaded skip were blown over my van, smashing the windscreen and denting the bodywork. £7k damage and the site owners (who had put the skip there) refused to admit any responsibility. Insured with Safeguard who paid up OK.

Give the motorhome a good check over... I had a caravan that was next to a fire and written off, check all seals as panels will shrink in the heat and the seals themselves will shrink too.... some plastics will shrink or expand and of Course warping...

If all good you’ve had a lucky escape.... buy a lotto ticket...??

I wonder whether Safegard subrogated against the persons who overloaded the skip, if known. There is a long-standing legal principle established in the case of 'Rylands v. Fletcher' that if somebody accumulates items on a property and those items escape and cause damage to another's property the person accumulating them is liable for the damage.

Marty Gilly and Pup so pleased to hear that your van appears to have escaped the fire unscathed. I can't imagine what was going through your head as you were driving over to check on it.
Very sad for the people who lost their caravans  but glad to hear that the man responsible was okay.

If the guy who caused the fire has let his insurance lapse who will pay for the damage to the other caravans?
Might not matte, there was fire ina multistory carpark in Preston about 30 years ago, many cars including my sons were written off. Insurance companies agreed that each would pay the claim for their vehicle. Not a good start for someone in their first year of insurance.
p.s. it was an electrical fault in the vehicle which started the fire. Was round about the time of a lot of bombings in the uk, scary.

Thanks Yvette. I was a bit blasé to be honest but Gill was a bit more concerned. I was envisaging a new van lol.
