Self Build W907 PVC
Exp
Sept 2017
As some of you know, we're building a PVC at the moment and today I've had an experience that I have to share.

One of the things I wanted to test before covering the cable to the remote control with insulation was the Sterling B2B 120A Charger. For information Groot is fitted with a 14v 180A Alternator.

After everything was connected according to Sterling Power's latest guide the unit would only provide 80A at the Lithium battery, which I wasn't particularly impressed with.

I called Sterling and was put into a Menu system, which didn't baud well for the interaction! I was more than shocked when, after pressing 3 for technical, "Ben" answered the call within 2 rings! He was pleasant to speak to, didn't treat me like I was an idiot (he obviously doesn't know me), listened to what I had to say, asked me questions that were clear and concise, then provided a list of tests to complete.

I had several interactions with a couple of Sterling staff throughout today and at each stage they've been absolutely brilliant.

I'm totally happy with the outcome, and overjoyed in the knowledge that we've invested in something that is so passionately supported!

A Thumbs-up for Sterling Power !

Cheers

I am pleased that you had a positive experience with Sterling. I did not, quite the reverse 👿. I would never, ever buy their products again or have any dealings with them-

Did you get the amperage up to what you expected, as I have read about alternators only being 50% efficient ie 180=90 ah output ?

I've sent you a PM as I'm interested in why you feel the way you do, and ,if justified, I'm with you..

I can't answer that as we currently have no seats in the van, so I can't drive it.

But we're getting, at idle, 100A to the Lithium with a 14v 180A Alternator....

As long as you don't get the boss.
Charles Stirling is a very abrupt Irishman.
Agreed. We have some of his products on the boat and when the skipper needed clarification of the something he rang the help line. He spoke to Charles who assumed he was an idiot (he’s very much NOT an idiot but an engineer/motor electrician of many years standing) and spoke to him accordingly.

Same here. I won't touch their gear anymore after multiple failures.

My dealings with Sterling have been positive when I rang them a couple of times for clarification on a couple of queries that I had. (y)
That is my experience too. :)

That was also my experience first time round :( but not second time round. :)

Doesn't suffer fools gladly, you mean.
I got the impression Paul, that he thinks everyone is very tech savvy. Some of us aren't, and need laymans terms/help.

Cheers,

Jock. :)

I bought my B2B direct from them during one of the lock downs
Got completely lost in the set up and called them
The guy I spoke to was obviously working from home and was def having a torrid, gawd awful day
He was rude, obnoxious and generally horrible, coming across as someone who a) did not want to be talking to anyone, and b) someone who knew less about the product than me !
If he had been in front of me one of us would have been picking teeth off the floor
I sorted it myself.
Since then I have had a minor issue and called them again
What a world of difference !!
Really helpful and nice to speak to
So 'Steve' or what ever your name was, I forgive you.. we all suffered under lock down mate... Hope your day went better after my call ended...
You are proly a nice bloke and normally helpful like the rest of the team at Stirling :-) ( who def get a big thumbs up from me too !

Victron all day long.
I love Victron kit . I just find their lithium batteries out of my price range. That said I would I install them if I could afford it .

Yes, Blue is definitely the easy choice... If money is no object, I'm not entirely sure it's THEE most cost effective choice...

I picked up 300Ah, 5 yr warranty for not much more than that... If people believe the hype, then they will charge for it.

Just thought I'd post this quote up from an ongoing email conversation I've been having with Ben Sterling, as it may well go some way to explaining historical support issues that people may have experienced (I did request permission to share it)

"Support can be a bag of tricks especially when there’s multiple people who can pick the line up. We actually put a delay on Charles Sterling Sr’s phone to as to stop him upsetting the general public if he picked the phone up before myself or someone else on the technical support line- as it was his support (and indeed sometimes my brothers) that meant our Google review rating was <2* before I joined the company. We’re now happily up at a 4.6* thanks to myself, William and Owen’s active attempts to keep people happy."

Cheers
