Having some probes getting a picture in some of the places we are in atm as its remote at times , so I'm looking to get the most out of our status aerial that is installed on Wendy ( our MH )
So what is the difference between the aerial being horizontal vs vertical - how do I know when to put it vertical.
Also there are like 2 periscope aerials that you can pull out of the rear of the aerial itself . But this involves a visit to the roof , so what's the crack with them, what are they for .
Thanks

The extendable bits are for radio reception.
Horizontal and vertical polarity......main transmitters transmit on one polarity and repeaters transmit on the other polarity.
You can get a signal if the wrong one is selected but its very hit n miss.
Google UK tv transmitters and You’ll get a list of what transmitter is on which polarity....but you do need to know which mast area you are in.

Wherever you go try and see which way the aerials on houses you pass are pointing and what orientation they have.

Just looked at the app I forgot I had installed , it's called UK aerial alignment
Shows my closest transmitter 43km away, I don't think it lists antennas in the south of Ireland , anyway it says the following info about that transmitter bearing 117.4 degrees Pol :V Aerial group B

I take it that the " pol v " means its vertical ??

Yes, vertical polarisation and the group B refers to the channels it is transmitting.. From 35 to 53
Though since digital went live an awful lot of transmitters are using virtually all channels ! ( 21 to 68 so a wide band antenna as fitted to just about all motorhomes that have an antenna )
Where abouts are you Bart ?

If in doubt with vertical/horizontal set it to 45 degrees and you'll get both then when on channel try H and V to see which is best.

Bet its a bit chilly there at the moment !!!

You are pretty close to the Hollywell Hill transmitter.. It is vertically polarised :)
