Donkeys years!
Can anybody help out there? I have a 1997 412D Sprinter with the 2.9 td turbo and 4speed autobox. The issue is that it will keep cutting back on its power at about 50mph, and some days I just know I'm not going to get it up to 60 on the straight. When it's running fine, I can cruise at 70 comfortably, and push on up to 75-80 if necessary, again without strain. But then the imp cuts in and I slowly drop back through all the traffic until it decides to get going again. Stopping and putting it into Park doesn't necessarily cure it, either. I've checked the EGR unit, that's fine. It's been doing it for a couple of years now, I live in the west of Cornwall and I just can't find a mechanic who know's what he is doing, even MB Commercial. Any thoughts?? Kate.o_O:madder:

I,m surprised you can't find someone who knows what they are doing.
That's old school engineering and mechanics.
Lovely engine and gearbox a great base for a conversion, it will see you out the mechanical side of things if you look after it.
Just watch out for the old tin worm.

Sadly had to give up
Exp
2010-2017
We had a similar problem on a 2008 2.2 auto when we were in Morocco. It got gradually worse as we were doing significant mileage until eventually giving up the ghost entirely.
It was due to water entering the throttle body electonics which manage the butterfly valve. We had gone through some dredaful wet weather and deep standing water.
Once the throttle body was replaced we never had another bit of trouble.
It did however take most of a day with the engine connected to a Mercedes Star computer to diagnose the exact problem.
The good news for us was that labour costs in Morocco are unbelievably cheap.
The bad news was that the part was expensive, had to come from Germany and was subject to 100% import duty!
