my son is looking at a van full service history 68000 miles fluid was changed recently whats the verdict on this gearbox?

For it's time the 'Sprintshift' was and still is a very good auto box. Mercs are generally very reliable. I've got 2 sprinter in my minibus fleet. We have 2012 with a 5 speed auto which I've been driving today. I've had it since new and with 172000 miles on the clock it still changes gear as good as new. I've also got a 2018 516 7G 7 speed Sprinter which has only covered 30000 miles and the gearbox is simply fantastic.

The ones you mention are full autos though, I know a few people who have had big problems with the Sprintshift, which is why Mercedes dropped it
I would always prefer the full torque converter auto if buying used Upto 2006.
