I didn't say aim for it. I was merely pointing out the perimeters within which it operates. Goodness I have been on enough driving courses to know the speed limit isn't a target. I think that's what they said
Wouldn't it be easier just to stick within the speed limit as shown by your speedo. No chance of actually speeding then.

That doesnā€™t always work when you have a queue of Audi and BMW drivers so desperate to overtake that you regular see very close near misses and you as the MH driver have slow down even more. šŸ˜±

I am starting to get a phobia. It isn't just Audi and BMW drivers who exceed speed limits.

Just got back from a three-day break at Blackmore C&CC Site.....to find an ā€˜intention to prosecuteā€™ notice in my post for the alleged offence of driving at 68mph on the A417 Brockworth by-pass dual carriageway near the A46 Gloucester junction:mad:. The date/time is correct (I was on my way to Blackmore), so I guess that Iā€™m bang-to-rights unless I can prove that my unladen weight is less than 3.05 tonnes........

Take it to a weighbridge and get a ticket (after taking all possible items out /empty tanks).

Is the unladen weight entered on your V5 as all we have on ours is the "Mass in service" at 1690Kg, no unladen weight.

hi, ive had a quick look at the spec of an eldis majestic 155 and its showing the mass in running order as 2924kg... as the mass in running order has items included that the definition of unladen weight does not include its safe to say your unladen weight is below 3050 kg..
id be inclined to reply to your letter pointing out that you are a motorhome and you were abiding by the speed limit that relates to your vehicle....thats assuming that section of carriageway had no other speed restriction in force...

As far as I understand the speed limit in UK is based on the unladen weight, that being the base weight of the van (it's on the V5). I uprated my Ducato Pvc to 4500kg but it's base weight is less than 3000kg so car speed limits apply in UK. Not so in the rest of Europe it seems. They base speed limit on maximum weight which for me is 4500kg. That said, would they know unless they check the plate (if you fit a new one after uprating, just saying). The French and Italian motorway toll booths certainly don't seem to know the difference when calculating your toll charges.

You have the 10% plus 2 miles per hour buffer so if the limit is 60, doing 65 should be within this buffer
Yes but that is not law. The speed limit is law. Police forces are sometimes flexible in allowing a margin but sometimes are not. A haulier based in Lincs says the police are ok with 10% but cross the border to Norfolk and apparently, they allow no leeway at all. (Norfolk n chance). I was done several years ago doing 33 in a 30....

Thanks for all the replies/comments, Fellow Funsters! (y)
Iā€™m checking various websites (DVLA, etc.) to get more information, and will contact the Camera Enforcement Unit on Monday to see why this notice has been issued, and how I go about challenging it. I suspect the answer will be that it is just to identify the driver so that a summons may be issued to that person, and that any ā€˜challengeā€™ will be addressed then.....

There's a lot of mention of tolerance on speed limits but I thought one of the reasons for this was because the speed camera could have an error of 2mph so if you your true speed is 30 then the camera may record it as 32 and likewise if your true speed is 33 then it may be recorded at 35 mph.

As the Government info, I posted originally proves, If you can prove your UNLADEN mass is 3050kg or below. then the enforcement is in error.

I have not used that particular road for some years so unsure, but if NO centre barrier, (only, say, a grass median) I believe it is a 60mph restricted road.

P.S. Just had a "google". it would appear that most of it at least has Armco. which suggests it is a 70 MPH legal road.

I thought that an Armco type barrier was not essential to the definition of a dual carriageway. I understood that it required a separation of the 2 carriageways so that the cars passing in opposite directions were not immediately adjacent to each other.

You are living in the past they don't use that criteria anymore. 32 is enough to get you a ticket in a 30 these days.
When they were working on the M3 and had a 50 limit I read that the averaging cameras were set to 52.

The caravelle was developed from the panel van
VW transporters can be subject to commercial and car speed limits depending on type, passenger carrying vw Van's or dual purpose (or cdv's) have their own unladen weight rules that determines speed limits
A T5 panel van is a commercial and can be done for doing 70mph on a dual
carraigeway
Many of the T4/5/6 owners have been prosecuted.........the T2/3 owners dream of getting to 70mph šŸ‘

It is only a guide, if a new traffic officer gets appointed and wants to nick every one 1mph over the limit he can.

What is is it with drivers and speed limits, a speed limit is a maximum you should keep below not a target figure to aim for and get away exceeding.

I wasn't suggesting that the speed limit is a target, just pointing out factual information from freedom of information request as there seem to be different opinions on what tolerance apply.

In total, 45 police forces contacted, 33 responded, with the vast majority confirming that cameras would only be activated if drivers went over the speed limit by 10% plus 2mph - as recommended by the Association of Chief Police Officers.

I wasn't arguing with you just pointing out they don't have to stick to the guidelines.
