Help please, if you know the answer.... I’m in France with a chum who has a large Bailey MoHo. Even though we’re in convoy, he has been getting flashed on the dual carriageways whilst doing under 90kph, but I don’t get flashed in my smaller van. His vans max weight is 4.5t, mine is a tonne lighter.
I know some speed limits have changed but finding the new limits online is very confusing, ranging from 80 to 110 on these roads.
Any up to date facts would be helpful, thanks!

I m not at home with computer right now so will do searches to be precise and give you the right info but roughly lorries must be 80kms except on motorways. Will explain better when home.

Thanks all, still not helping though as these flashes have occurred on dual carriageways with central reservations. The posted limit has been 110kph on each occasion. The online facts vary hugely- he just wants to know what speed he should be doing on these roads. Yodell, if you know the definitive answer, I’m all ears

Are you on the A10 as the limits for over 3500kg is that same as lorries for long stretches.

I've just got back from France and was flashed twice on either the A28 or A16 autoroutes where the speed limit is 130kph for cars.

I'm in a 3.3t PVC so I think that the same speed limit for cars applies. I was doing 97kph the first time and 100kph the second so can only think that the vehicle is activating them for some reason though based on that they must get 100's of false activations.

I know that in the UK some speed cameras pick up vehicles based on height. Our works 7.5t van would often get flashed when we were doing near 50mph back when the speed limits for HGVs was 40mph.

First thing to know is Lorry speed limits needs a lorry on the sign.
If you have a sign with a weight on, it means it's for all vehicles being that weight.
Other than that a heavy weight moho is to respect a 110kms/h on a motorway, 100 on voies rapides which are a bit like motorways but crossing towns most of the time and free of charge, 80 on dual carriages (meaning without anything, be it wall or barriers(I wdon't know wat it's called in English sorry) and 50 in town even thought it's indicating 70kms for cars.

So I would think the speed limit had a sign with the weight on, and then your friend was over it. Or mistake of the machine with the van being high, which can happen.
Look when your friend gets his fine ticket, send me a copy so I can see whether it's right or not, and if not, I'll make a complain on his behalf.

Un camping-car poids lourd affiche un PTAC de plus de 3,5 tonnes. A ce titre, il est sujet à quelques règles de circulation particulières, notamment des limitations de vitesse sur certains segments routiers. Comment s'y retrouver? Il suffit de regarder le panneau.
Lorsque le panneau de limitation de vitesse est placé au-dessus d'un panonceau mentionnant un poids (3,5 t par exemple), c'est que l'interdiction concerne tous les poids lourds. En revanche, lorsque ce panneau comporte un dessin de camion, c'est que seuls les transports de marchandise sont touchés par la limitation.

Pour le reste, les camping-cars poids lourds sont limités à 110 km/h sur l'autoroute, 100 km/h sur voie rapide, 80km/h sur route à deux voies et 50 km/h en agglomération (même lorsqu'un panneau autorise les autos à atteindre les 70 km/h).

Hi Frankie, one point I'm not sure on is the 70 limit for short stretches on main road when passing junctions. Not sure when over 3.5t is it 60 or 50?

The answer is the speed camera detects a big vehicle so has a flash, so to speak, on the assumption it is an HGV.

When they see the image is of a MH they won't pursue it further.

Assuming the vehicle was obeying the limit for its class of course.

@Lenny HB I had a look on Wiki , and didn't find anything about those 70kms /hour on those small stretches you talked about. So as I said I would think if no weight indicated on the sign then it's the same for everyone.
Don't forget that also applies rain rule
When speed limit is 100 it goes down to 80 always 20 kms difference and also this specific point:

En cas de visibilité inférieure à 50 mètres, les vitesses maximales sont abaissées à 50 km/h sur l'ensemble des réseaux routier et autoroutier.

If for some reason you can't see more than 50 metres ahead , your speed limit goes down to 50 kms/h on all types of roads even motorways

It has almost become a game for us..........will it flash or not.
On motorways, where our speed limit is 110kph for over 3.5t, some cameras will flash us if we are over 90kph, thinking we are an HGV and some won't.
We are now in the habit of watching in the mirrors to see if we've been flashed.
Fortunately we've yet to get a ticket even though we've been flashed many times.
We are always below the 110kph limit though.................well nearly always.

Thanks Clarky, that’s what he needs to hear. He’s getting himself properly wound up by all this camera attention.
Thanks to everyone else, it seems to be a confusing area of French legislation. Many UK organisations list the speed limits but they often contradict each other or are just plain out of date.

@The Rolling Stones we experienced this a fair bit on our way down south in June and to be honest I was getting concerned that I'd misunderstood the speed limits, even though I'd studied them well. I've not received any tickets so would agree with previous posts, that they may well be height activated.
