I'm looking at purchasing a spare wheel for our Motorhome we have the standard 16" 225/75/R16 Alloy wheels on a fiat chassis 5 bolt 118 PCD. Preferably I would like to get a spare alloy wheel due to weight but the cost in my opinion is not worth it plus the fact that I hope I will never have to use it. What I would like to know is if you use it temporary does this have an effect on the driving on the vehicle with 3 now being alloy and 1 steel? Apologies in advance if this sounds like a stupid question.

It'll drive fine. I've had several cars with a steel spare. Some had '50mph max' on them (despite being a regular size tyre). Some did not.

I believe you'll need a different set of wheel bolts for the steel wheel. My camper certainly comes with a set.

I fitted 5 bolt 118 PCD 16" alloy's and bought a 16" 5 bolt 118 PCD steel wheel for a spare.
The offset on all 5 wheels is the same as are all 5 tyres the same, so it will make no difference as to whether it's a steel or alloy on any of the corners and a steel and alloy are about the same weight.

Don’t think there’s a lot of difference weight wise🤔
The newer Ducato’s don’t need different bolts we have a 2018 with alloys and same bolts can be used on steel we have steel and never used also on previous van never used😊

Fab. One less thing for Bob to buy.

My base is slightly different, which may explain why I need them? A 2021 Citroen relay with the 130 PCD wheels.

I made it home from France somewhat cautiously on a rusty steel wheel and (very old) spare tyre that didn't match the 3 alloys and newer tyres.

Apart from the cosmetics, alloy wheels reduce unsprung weight, thus improving handling, but doubtful if one would notice the difference in a 3500kg MH!
It seems to me that alloy wheels made for 3.5 tonne vans are mega thick, very strong............ and very heavy

For anyone interested a 16” steel rim for Ducato is 13 kg
16” alloy rim 11.10 kg
1.9kg x4 hardly worth worrying about🤔
And alloys tend to have more of their mass nearer the rim. So their rotational momentum might actually be worse than a steelie...

There is less than 1lb difference between the van's alloys and the steel spare on my Renault Master.

I was amazed how much my 16" alloy spare wheel weights. I don't even carry it any more, it cuts down my spare payload by far too much.
