Having followed a couple of threads regaling issues having no spare wheel I thought I would at least buy a tyre to take with us on our next trip to France.

So…… our new van has the quite expensive camping car tyres fitted all round. Being a tight bu££er I wondered if I bought a new van tyre as a get me home fix would that be ok? It means mixing two makes of tyre on one axel for a bit. What are your thoughts?

If you can change it yourself that's OK but the French stipulate that both tyres on an axle are the same make and type so if one is wrecked and they can't match the un damaged one they make you have two new ones😠

Or you could get a cheaper tyre as a spare which is readily available and they would sell you one to go with your spare... even if you get an expensive "camping car tyre" there is no guarantee they could supply one of those so you would still require to buy two new tyres.

but should be OK if the spare tyre matched the existing running tyres?

I think it a case of buy one camping car tyre spare or don’t take any and be prepared to buy two van tyres if I had a blow out and they couldn’t match the originals

Full size spare alloy with matching Conti VancoCamper on it. Really don't want to be waiting around for a French/Italian/etc mechanic roaming around on a Sunday to try and find a pair of matching 215 R15s. Also, it means that I can change it myself.

Alloys are usually less heavy than steel spares.

Great question. We decided to buy a new matching tyre and have it fitted to the spare wheel which had a tyre unused but out of date. A bitter pill but peace of mind.

Recently had the puncture resistant gel filling in all tyres but have been carrying the spare, but will try trusting the gel in the UK but not so sure abroad. The peace of mind by carrying a spare offsets the worry of the extra 30kg of spare. Got all season Michelins including spare.

Had recently 2 front tyres fitted and kept the best of 2 coming off as a spare. So I have all the same make and size. Hope I should be ok.

That's the conclusion I had when considering the relative merits of a tyre only or tyre on a spare wheel
