Spare keys and mystery fob / key card (1 Viewer)

Hello helpful people

Question 1: I need a spare “fold down key + 2 button alarm fob” for my Fiat Ducato Hobby. See below. The Timpsons I went to said no, so what’s the best option please? I’ve seen this type of thing but if I buy one, who would ‘programme the chip’ and cut the key?

Question 2: I also need a spare key for my ‘deadlock’ on the side door. Photo below. It looks like a key for a bicycle ‘D lock’ if that’s helps to describe it? Timpsons didn’t like that one either.

Question 3: The fob and code card in the last photo came with the van. I’m guessing the code card is for the Clifford alarm in case I lose the keys? But what about the black fob? Are the 2 items linked in any way?

Some, but not all, professional automotive locksmiths can program Fiat keys. Look for some in your area and ask them. The alternative is a Fiat dealer, but I think supply and programming of a new remote fob is pretty expensive.

For the habitation door key, unless it has the make and a key number on it, I'd try a few local locksmiths and ask their advice. If you do know the make and key number, the original manufacturer of the lock might be able to help.

The black tag is I suspect something to do with the alarm system. Does the alarm have its own immobiliser function built in? Often, similar tags are used to swipe a panel or hidden area on the dash to disable the immobiliser before starting the engine.

The code card I can definitely help you with. It is issued by Fiat and contains the vehicle key mechanical cutting code and the electronic security code. The cards are not issued for vehicles built to UK specification for security reasons required by the police and insurance industry, but Fiat still supply them for other markets, which includes motorhome conversion chassis such as converted by Hobby.

Put it away somewhere safe in your house, and do not leave it in the vehicle. With the codes that are on it, a thief could start your vehicle in seconds and drive it away, or anyone who has access to the vehicle could use the information on it to obtain a new key to use at their leisure.

The only thing i can add is my local cobbler also does keys , too far far you! I have had audi fiat and recently a ptogrammed one for the up. On my recent trip he mentioned that the equipment cost is beginning to outstrip returns, if he can continue a database only subscription (he uses an Italian site ) he will carry on with restricted capability. So it looks like genuine users may be priced out of the market ( but not scroates)

The key fob you linked to is only a replacement case with no guts in it.

I recently bought a new complete remote key fob with the circuit board and immobiliser chip on eBay and had our local mobile auto locksmith cut and program the remote to operate the same as my other keys for £100.

He connected to the OBD port which he then downloaded the existing remote info onto the new remote and then cut the new key blade.

I had out spares for our Fiamma hab door lock which is the same type as your deadlock done at an independent high street locksmith when we were visiting Chester last year.

well as ever, what a great list of responses. I've now found a local locksmith to do the deadlock for £6 and a local automotive locksmith to do the fiat key for £125, which doesnt seem unreasonable. Many thanks again for all the replies

MultiECUscan will programme up to 8 blank key fob transponders. Cutting the key can be done at many locksmiths.

The vehicle will store up to 8 keys, but normally at least 2 slots are already in use. Transponders can apparently be introduced to the vehicle with MES, but only if they have been pre-seeded compatibly with the vehicle. The system isn't a single stage process as used on many other vehicles and requires investment in specialist equipment to prepare suitable transponders, which is why quite a few locksmiths and generic key services aren't interested or able to help.

If you intended obtaining the kit to prepare them yourself, it would probably be cheaper to buy a compromise device from one of the infamous suppliers.

Having the door slam on you in heavy winds and been locked out it can cause a lot of problems. When we were locked out we were on a small aire in France we had help from other MH’s. Who kept us supplied with drinks (orange) and food until help arrived. All the emergency telephone numbers and our telephones were inside. After six hours help arrived , two very ice locksmiths jand they took less than 3 minutes to get in. ( I am not saying how) if we had been wild camping I am not sure what we would have done.

I NOW HAVE SPARE KEYS WHICH ARE IN A MAGNECTIC BOX WHICH IS ATTACHED TO THE UNDERSIDE OF THE VAN AND FOR EXTRA SECURITY CABLE TIED AS WELL.

The black thing with the green line on it, should just hang from your key ring and the immobiliser/alarm should recognise it and let you start the van. You should already have one on the set of keys you use, if not it is probably surplus to requirements

The black fob with been line is a transponder, a lot of places use them for access to buildings, just wave it in front of the pad and as if by magic the door unlocks, so any form of security really.
The card would be to code new keys etc.

I hope that you never need to make an insurance claim and that the insurer doesn't see your post.

Whilst on the subject of theft, we’ve seen a few instances of vehicles being stolen where vehicle keys were hidden on or under the vehicle. All motor insurance policies, whether it’s for a car, motorhome, or campervan exclude claims where keys have been left in or on the vehicle, so this method of storing keys should be avoided.

If you have got a key hidden on the vehicle, is it additional to the two keys that were originally supplied with it? Insurer's usually ask for both keys to be handed to them before they will settle a total loss, and there may be problems if you can only supply one. Ditto if the vehicle is recovered and they find there were more keys programmed to the vehicle than you surrendered.

With some vehicles, it is also possible to examine the keys and establish which was last used prior to (or at the time of !!!) the incident.

We cannot be locked out in the manner you describe because our Hab(only) door needs a key to close/lock it.

However our way to cover the spare key situation is for me to carry a full set of keys and for another full set to be secreted in the MH. The OH carries a spare just for Hab door in her wallet, so we have two hab keys between us and can get access to the MH and the full spare set.
