I am always very aware of loosing our motorhome keys in somewhere remote. I wondered about hiding one somewhere on the outside of the motorhome or carrying the spare with us so if we lost a key at least we could use our motorhome. Anyone have any thoughts?

we have one of these attached to the chassis

On a previous van, I had a flat hab door key with no plastic taped to the wall inside the fridge vent. Impossible to see from outside, but if you know it is there, you know to peel off the tape by touch

Yep, I've got a hidden hab door key outside the van. A second set of keys are kept in the safe inside.

Slightly off topic, but our new [to us] m/home has 2 sets of keys, but only one central locking remote control. Cab Passenger door has no keyhole to permit manual unlocking, but there is provision in the driver's cab door. The habitation door doesn't appear to lock without the remote control being used. Is it worth buying a 2nd remote central locking remote from FIAT? I suspect that it will be another 'silly money' cost for the local FIAT garage to programme the remote?

I am surprised that the hab door does not have a key... Ours works off the central locking system and its own key.

Sounds like a good idea but we have an alarm, so would need to hide that fob too.

Jim has an article on the very subject worthy of a read.

I would not be keen to discuss hidden things on open forum.

My present NFU insurance has a section about duty of care that requires you to safeguard against theft. My previous insurers were very specific that any spare key left in the vehicle must be in a locked safe. Best to check your insurance documents, we always take both sets of keys and tracker driver cards with us but if you travel alone that is not so easy.

Last I had heard (about 6\7 years back) they were looking at over £300 and can't remember if that included the programming of the fob!

Slightly related........

I have been looking at some safety box key opening doors which fit on the passenger side of Mercedes Sprinters seats as shown in the images.
They replace the insecure removable plate in the underside seat, where the fuse box is located on the opposite seat.

Has anyone seen anything similar for sale in the UK ?
Seem like quite a good idea .

Normally 2 people travelling, so two sets of keys I always have a secure belt clip and always keep my keys on it.

swmbo always has her keys around her neck (maybe not tight enough 😉)

I would be a bit careful about discussing where to hide keys on Motorhomes on an open forum🤔

If you mean swmbo I really wouldn't worry 😉

No I wasn’t referring directly to your post but in general it’s not a good idea😊

If you buy this, I’ll test it for you, if it takes me more than 15 seconds to open it I’ll pay for it and the new one.

So would I, that said there are a lot of places to hide a key around a MH. I hide one because I'm solo, if I was to loose my keys I'd have to break in to get the spare set.

I realise that there are numerous places however prospective thieves may not know them all but will soon find out a few more reading this thread won’t they?
it’s not a good idea full stop. (Coming from a retired crime reduction officer in a previous life)😊

This subject was discussed only last week and I said then I cannot believe why Funsters would want to discuss on an open forum where they hide spare keys to what could be a very expensive moho.
Same as I can't believe Facetubers who state they are really pissed off because their holiday flight to Benidorm has been delayed and they have to sit in the airport for 5hrs
OOOHHH by the way come on round.... my house will be empty for two weeks.😎😎

I agree, I wouldn't tell anyone where my key is hid. Talking about the 'should I, shouldn't I hide a key is fine. I'm a member on a trade forum, the question of how to secure plant and machinary pops up regularly, my stock reply is, never tell anyone how you secure your gear.

I actually find it quite odd that any couple feel they are likely to lose two sets of keys,so feel the need to put a set in a hidey hole. My wife and I are as scatty as a barrel of frogs and even we have never lost any keys in forty years. Some folk worry too much, methinks.:giggle:

Yes absolutely.... you don't have to say where you hide your key..but some other Funsters will come along and say I hide my key here or here or here and then Mr Nasty Guy will walk by a very nice and expensive moho and think..."off chance".. is there a key hidden in those aforementioned places.
Come Funsters... use a bit o common sense.
