the nonsensical thing is I looked at an identical one that was 1989 but had been imported from Germany 4 or 5 years earlier . They'd offer Full comp on that as it was " only 5 years old" It is when it is registered here in spain & not how old .

Alliance....my motorhome insurer...my van is 15 years old and I have fully comp.....

But did you have it insured with then before it was 10 or 12 years old.? if so no problem it is when you try & change or buy an older one that you find you can't get anything other than 3rd party or 3rd party F&T.



That Zalba Caldu is a specialist MH & caravan insurer & it is they that went to great lengths to explain to me that the 25 year old spanish from new MH could only have T,P,F&T but the 26 year old but only registered here in spain 5 years earlier ,could have full comp.

Once you obtain full comp you can renew it forever but don't try to change companies after 10 or 12 years as anyone else normally will only offer tPF&T

Cheers Gus....that will save me a bit of fuss...I pay a bit over the odds...but maintaining current cover I will stick as I am, well until I buy my new Morello....

You should be able to get full comp on that at 11 years old.

** Another odd thing. **
When I first insured this van a couple of years ago I was going to increase the excess
( franquicia). Now it has always fascinated me when using spanish online calculators how much the premium rises if you ever choose No excess ? I assumed it was similar to the Uk . ( never assume)
So when I suggested increasing it to Antonio my broker, the sharp intake of breath & vigorous shaking of the head told me I wasn't on the right track.
he then explained how it works. I wasn't sure I understood correctly as it was bizarre so he disappeared & returned with a toy car & explained it whilst pointing to the various parts of the car.

Basically there isn't one excess for any claim. The excess , if I am to believe him & why shouldn't I as he is an insurance broker, is for
damage to the front of the vehicle,
damage to the back of the vehicle,
damage to the left side of vehicle,
damage to the right side of the vehicle,
damage to the underside of the vehicle .
damage to the roof of the vehicle.
So if you have a roll over you have 6x your excess deducted if you are claiming on your own insurance.
If claiming on the other parties then they would be paying you in full.

Some other useless information that surfaces now & then & is of use to people unused to how it works here

there does not appear to be any "knock for knock" .
they always claim off the other party. Hopefully there is one
In the event of a right off whichever insurance company is paying you out has 40 or 42 days to settle in full ( not dead sure but it is an odd amount & I'm sure 40 days is correct)

in the event of an accident ,even if it is one you witness , there is a specific offence of " failing to render assistance" This is why you see so many stopping ,even on the opposite carriageway, as they don't wish to be done for it. It used to be an easy fine for the police years ago. Even if the police are in attendance I still make the offer.

One broker told me Allianz wouldn't cover the risk!!
Another broker would only offer third party!!
Liberty over 2000 euro's for fully comp!!
Another broker told me Liberty would only insure third party!!
So tried Abbeygate and can't fault them.They actually seem to know something about motorhomes.
Really really good but it still took nearly a week to organise so patience is required.
Can't believe how involved it's been but this is Spain so I should be used to it now.
So if you have an issue with getting insurance try Abbeygate based in Malaga.
Everything sorted out over the phone and by email

Hi. Thank you for the message. After a number of research, I managed to get my MH covered Fully Comp with Liberty for €470 Euros. My agent here in Javea, Alicante, even got me €30 cash back as I paid through bank transfer. So the yearly cost was €440. Not bad and I am delighted.
