Hi all,

Has anyone any recommendations for camp sites in the South of France with access to a good beach and walking distance to town/supermarket/shops?
We have a 8.6m long tag, so need to take into account access & egress, overhead tree's on site etc.
And the best of it is, we will be going in the main school summer holidays.
(What it must be like for you retiree's to go when you like?!:censored:)
Someone mentioned Port Grimaud? - am I going to need to re-mortgage?
Thanks in advance!
Gav

Love love love Port Grimaud. :)
Another vote for Port Grimaud - we stay in Les Mures, which is equidistant between Port Grimaud, St Tropez and Ste Maxime. All within cycling distance and the site is in two parts - there is a beach side, where you can camp on the sand, but we don't bother with that, we pitch in the other part of the site, and then carry the chairs etc to the beach, which is lovely. It's an ACSI site so the prices are very good too.

There are aires on the road, but we haven't bothered with them - there's no shade and the road is REEEEALLLLLYYY busy!

Not a campsite, but an aire on the South West coast of France,
Mimizan Plage will cater for all of your needs, at €14 per night
Including EHU it might be worth a look.

Plenty of room for large vehicles on the Aire, and plenty of room on the beach as well at Mimizan Plage.

Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer in the Camargue is great.

The aire is right on the beach and there is a campsite right beside it so either way you're covered. The aire is about €11 per night so not too bad. No idea about the site costs.

It's a fantastic old town with a great beach. The Camargue is different from the rest of France, almost more like Spain. Well worth a visit.

It's a holy town to gypsies and on a Sunday, especially around the churches, there will be loads. There is also a pilgrimage once a year, i believe some time in June, when thousands of them travel there. You don't want to go at that time.

Les Mures for us as a fave also. Lovely 25 min cycle to Ste Maxime, 10 mins cycle to beautiful Port Grimaud and 30 mins to St Tropez. Wonderful site.

The Camargue can be hotter than Hades in August - we've used the Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer campsite which is close to the salt marshes. It has regular pitches and a cheaper MH only compound. The pitches have a bit of shade but it varies.

If you're talking SW (ie Atlantic coast) as opposed to S in the Med sense, there's a large forested aire and a neighbouring campsite (take your pick) at Biscarrosse-Plage with a medium sized supermarket close to both. The usual hypermarkets are at Biscarrosse-Bourg a little way inland. The resort isn't too far away but it's a bit tacky in the arcade and candy floss sense, which is unusual for France. However the nearest beach is the typical wide wild sandy type like that one in the Mimizan-Plage pic above, backed by large dunes and a pine forest. There's well appointed bike tracks in the area. You're not supposed to spread out on the aire (ie chairs, awning) but most people ignore that and there are central open spaces with picnic tables anyway. There's even a superloo near the aire's service point.

We're big fans of the Biarritz area but we only use aires. For bigger vehicles I'd suggest the aire by the River Adour at La Barre. There's a medium sized supermarket a short bike ride away in the direction of Bayonne. The nearby aire at Anglet is a more convenient for the beach but is likely to be busier and a bit tight for parking. Local bus services along the various beaches are very good.

Yes Camping de L'Hippodrome, 5 Avenue des rives - 06270 VILLENEUVE LOUBET PLAGE - Tél : 04 93 20 02 00 - Fax : 04 92 13 20 07. It's not bang on the beach but it is not far away just short walking distance. I doubt if you will find a campsite on the beach on the Cote d'Azure. We often use Camping de L'Hippodrome in late summer/autumn. it is a very clean, well positioned and well run site which is open all year round, situated between Nice and Antibes. Restaurants, bars and marina close by. Supermarket Giant Casino short walk away. Trains and buses within walking distance to Cannes, Monaco, Nice etc. We usually cycle to Nice and Antibes but use the train or bus to Monaco and Cannes. Price per night for two people in a motorhome + electric out of season is €24.60 per night, obviously more expensive in high season. If you need any more info just PM me. Here is their website:

Was chatting to a French guy on site in Ille de Re this summer and mentioned that I was considering the South of France.
He looked at my motorhome and told me to forget it.
He said that unless I book a site, I would struggle on Aires or turning up on spec in an 8.5m plus motorhome.
That said, I would have been travelling in a July/August.

Another vote for les mures.
We just managed to get on the beach. Great site, loads of regulars are on the front line of the beach, so don't expect to get a place(bit like trying to get on Rowntree park at York;) )
Lovely people, but Jesus, the sea was cold the 1st week in September.

Love love love Port Grimaud. :)
Port Grimaud is a beautiful place we have lived there for 30 years and the surrounding villages are stunning. My vote would also be les mures but for really long vans check out Holiday Marina he has some emplacements that take them

We always stay at camping de la plage which is next door to les Mures. Ferry to st Tropez is a 10 minute walk away and don't forget your cheque book!(y)

Ă’oooooooer.....

Omg....that is where we got hit by that car all those years ago...we were on foot....
Wow, that has bought the memories flooding back. I see there is now an underpass, So I guess we weren't the only ones to get mown down.

love les Mures, it is full at the moment, friends couldn't get on, dread to thnk what it would be like in the summer. There were some very large vehicles parked there last time we went, one a converted artic. Booking opens in January, but no ACSI rates in holiday time, and it will be expensive.
