My son Harry would like to make proper sour dough bread.

I know there are some bakers amongst Funsters.

Can anyone help us with a starter? Where can we get some?

Our experience is limited to bread packets in the bread machine, but he's feeling adventurous.

You don't get it from anywhere, you make it.

This is a pretty basic method but there are plenty of others if you Google it:

It takes a bit of patience any there's a chance you might get a couple of false starts/failures but once you've got it going as long as you keep feeding it it will go on almost indefinitely.

We had one going a little while ago. It's well worth doing if you have the time and the patience (y)

Indeed, Tesco was just an example, Artisan bakers sell it too.

I'm a big sourdough fan. It, like real beer, has made a big comeback over recent decades. Ive found it readily available in Wales, the SE, France, italy and Greece. As Nick says not a lot of difference in the starters and you can make it. Big difference is the type and quality of flour that is used in the bread, best I've tasted is made from Puglia semolina flour.

BTW if he makes the stater and wants a break from feeding and maintaining it. It feezes well

We've been known to take our sourdough starter on holiday with us. They become a member of the family after a while. :)
