.
Is there a 5 g MIFI unit that uses batteries and usb or usb only.

been searching around the forum and there is so much information that there still seems no simple answer.
help wanted . I would rather use usb in the Moho than keep using changing or charging batteries.

You can get units that are intended for home use that have 12v adaptors and wire that into your Moho electrics.

My current work contract involves use of 5G, and even in the cities the coverage and performance isn't massively better than 4G. Most of the networks in the UK are currently a 4G system but using 5G frequencies, so most of the improvements promised by 5G aren't currently possible because it's bottlenecked by being slaved onto old gear. Personally I'm waiting and saving my money. I bought a cheap 4G MiFi a few months ago.

If you look at the specs or indeed the label on lots of Mifi devices they accept a 12v feed. The 3 pin plug supplied for home use with a small transformer built in does just that - supplies 12V. So all you need is a suitable power connector at the Mifi end and your choice of bare wire or 12V hella or 12V car plug at the other end. I use an old 12V car socket that was originally to feed 12V to the satellite dish in a cupboard.
Similar to this.....

12v lead

Netgear M5 ticks all your boxes.

Ah, just seen that you want a 5g one, can't help there!

But, is 5g available where you are, my phone and sim is 5g enabled, but think I've got it maybe twice in the last 12 months!

I thought 5 g was the way to go but seems now it’s awaiting technology to catch up.
the wife has 5 g on her phone and giffgaff gaff are giving more data if your on 5 g for the same costs.

but maybe while awaiting new tech I will be looking at all options to me.

Cheap answer is a Huawei router with external aerial. The power supply needs to be a stabilised 12v, as they are extremely sensitive to the supply voltage and are well known to die if over voltage (like when the battery on the van is getting charged)

So a solar charging system renders this system not so desirable then.

I made up my own stabilised lead that simply plugs in and adjusts the voltage up or down to exactly 12v automatically, cost about £5. Or you can buy them ready made on ebay

You just need to have voltage stabilizer between the 12v supply and the mifi

Works perfectly as I upgraded the usb charger in the cupboard where the fuses are

Solved for us.
well after a lot of consideration.

i guess some members carry with them two mobile phones and then the MIFI. 3 sims

We have two mobile phones both with sims.
now have an iPad with a sim . 3 Sims
another iPad that uses the hotspot from one of the mobile phones .
so now not requiring a MiFi unit.

or have I missed the point of a MIFI unit.

We got one to take advantage of the ability to fit an external antenna which has greatly improved the signal. Also means phone is not tied up.

Well, you’re managing three sim contracts for one.
With Mifi, you’ve the one sim contract for data and usually about 10 devices to link to it.
You’d still need a sim for calls, txt & data in mr & mrs smart phone so 3 sim contracts is hard to avoid 🤪

One advantage of a mifi is, when abroad you can buy a local pay-as-you-go data sim and put it in the mifi. Then you can enable wifi calling on your mobiles, and use an app like WhatsApp for calls, or call through the mifi sim. It wasn't so important when roaming charges were controlled by the EU, but now they're not it could save you packet.

If your mobiles are not dual-SIM, then another advantage is the mobiles keep their SIM so the number stays the same, no need to tell friends a new number.

Whilst there are many phones, MiFis and other such devices out there along with numerous use cases, 5G is not really there yet as a fully fledged consumer offering and certainly not available in a capability for our needs being limited in quality and quantity (except some cities) as 5G is just now.

Personally, I have stuck to 4G as I could not see any improvements/benefits of 5G for the next few years. At some point, I'll get a 5G enabled/ready MiFi but as I say, it's not worth it right now I don't think.

What I do advocate is good brand MiFi 4G router and a good quality external aerial - this gives much more in terms of signal quality and availability for all your devices. A system that boosts any existing (campsite/neighbor) WiFi signal has it's benefits too.

As has also been widely discussed, there are many 4G Data SIM deals to be had to suit your needs too.

So it's the aerial that is at the heart of it for most. Brand and 4G or 5G and amount if data is secondary.
