newbie
But, Can anyone tell me If I can walk on the roof of my 2016 Swift Escape 664 please..... It's not that I'm looking to do this on site but I'd like to know how Safe it is to get up on top to see stuff like at Airshows.... on the odd occasion...... TIA.

My MH is 20 years old BUT was the Autocruise design where the top was all one piece so both holds my weight and NO seams to worry about stressing and damaging. Same not true for all vehicles.

Some people add aluminium chequer plates in a few places to spread the load and save denting your roof.
Be careful though as the van does rock and you can lose your balance and fall. The roof can be slippy as well.

One moments lack of concentration when you’re watching that spitfire go overhead and you’ll be off there and down on the ground with a bump!

Make sure your means of access is secure. I've been stuck on the roof with the ladder laid on the ground.
Had to wait until wifey got home to get down..... And it was p!ssing down to boot.

Should have had a ladder that is bolted to the MH, he says unsympathetically.

As long as it is bonded construction which I think it is, it should be OK. Normal roof limit is 75kg.

What difference does being ten ft closer to an air show make???
You can see the nose lift,so if take off is your fascination then you will be excited and content!

No idea about your particular MH, but I’m a motorsport fan most UK circuits will NOT allow us to stand on vehicle roofs unless there is a safety rail around the outside and a ladder attached to the the vehicle.

The roof`s of my R-V`s where capable of taking the load, I have film of 8 Spitfires and a Hurricane, taken at Duxford from that vantage point, including the take off and Landings, not sure about the Rapido, even though I have been on it to clean the Solar Panels. You have to be careful Not to impose "Point Loads" though. Like say, placing a Chair on it to watch from. I always use soft footwear, and even a Piece of 1/2" ply to spread the load over a larger area.

My Swift ( new in June 18) ,the roof delaminated after 4 months. Went back to factory for a complete new roof
Sold van

In the end a couldnt LOOK at the roof never mind walk on it 😂

I suppose it is at your own risk. My 10 year old Autofail has a rear ladder and I used to climb on the roof to clean it. Last year I noticed when it rains I had a dripping in 2 windows, front and rear,, not a trickle, just an odd drip, drip. This year I removed and resealed the rear skylight and resealed around the big front one (after resealing round all seams on the sides (roof and awning recess which made no difference)) and this has cured it completely. Must have cleaned/knelt too close to the original skylight sealant and caused a tiny gap for the wet to wick in.
Happy now it is dry again and will not be getting on the roof ever again. :giggle:

If your not sure, don’t do it. Man next to me today told me he had only just recently recovered after breaking 3 ribs falling off his motorhome roof.

I sometimes cheat and park in a lane so I then get on the roof to see over the Hedges.........
