Came back from Spain in April via Somport Tunnel and really enjoyed the drive. Going back in January and would like to use this route again but weather will obviously play a big part in the decision. Planning to check the on the day - anyone know of how to get a weather and road state report for the Somport route? Not planning to carry chains so any snow issues will send me down the Med route.

The two crossings east of Somport are also good and I am sure there are signs well before these passes that inform you if they are closed. If weather is bad
Irun route is open most of the time..BUSBY.

I always check the weather ahead on my phone :)

There are electronic signs at the foot of the pass to tell you whether it's open so you can make a decision before the climb.

That route is used daily by trucks and snow ploughs are at the ready. If you want to cross using the pass that’s another matter. Somport tunnel all the time for us when going back and forth to Portugal, good easy run, no tolls, plenty of parking places to stay the night along that route.

There are normally road signs indicating if the tunnel is open on the road leaving Pau. Also tourist office in Aire sur I' Adour will always 'phone through to tunnel and check. There is also a good Aire in the town open in winter.

There are also web cams for the actual Col du som port although they will be showing the weather up higher.
