A really long shot question; I cannot travel to Europe to pick up my possible new motorhome so one of the ideas I had was to pay someone to pick up and bring to Cherbourg for ferry to Ireland. Would I be mad to trust 50K worth of Motor home with a stranger? I've exhausted all UK and Ireland second-hand market. An automatic 3.5 tonne, 4 berth is eluding me. I sold my Hymer of 10 years just before covid in February and never missed it so much when all other travel was curtailed.

There are firms that will collect and deliver on a trailer, someone on here had one collected from Spain, not cheap.

It wouldn't worry me in the slightest so long as all the paperwork/insurance was in place. Tons, and tons of extremely expensive items get moved about by third party companies every day.

Purely out of interest.
Where is the pick up from ?
Air fares would be covered ?
Might be interested if it falls within my 4 days off and Covid Quarantine not in play.

Just a thought.
Someone can pick it up from Germany, bring it back via tunnel then they would not have to self isolate.
Can you come to UK, declare that you are transiting, pick up motorhome, drive to ferry to ireland ?

I would think that the logistics of insuring a new vehicle that is not registered in either the UK or Ireland would be difficult to cover a 3rd party driver.

At the moment best Hymer alternative is an Autostar 690 in Vieux Charmont

Obviously if the green list eases travel I'd go myself. I'm working full time so 2 weeks in self isolation would cost me lost salary.

Would I trust a stranger who asks me to deliver a vehicle from Europe? it’s something I’d do for someone I know but not sure I’d do it for a stranger.

Back after a 3 year break.
I'm on the Cherbourg to Rosslare ferry tomorrow after 15 weeks in France. Quarantine in Ireland doesn't bother me as I have a large garden and land over there and quarantine in Ireland means I don't have to quarrantine when I return to UK.. I could be interested.

Trade Plates under a Motor Traders policy

Trade plates require a trader and cannot be loaned out, not sure that they are valid outside the UK, motor traders policies are not as easy to get as they used to be.

I was thinking more of insuring the members on here who have considered offering their services.

There are lots to consider now that several posters have reminded me of several risks rather than my worry about my new vehicle. Amongst those of course is the ever present risk of unwanted cargo. The more i think about it it's a non-runner but thanks to all replies. I'll just keep plugging with AutoTrader, Gumtree and all other search platforms.

Fair point, I have a French speaker who has spoken to the dealer a couple of times to get more info though the more I think about it it's an enormous risk and do I really want that? I'm going to wait a few weeks before I panic. I'm retiring for the 8th. time on Dec. 16th. and I could self isolate myself then and do a few jobs on the motorhome at home. It would be different if you had a UK/Ireland purchase and it was not as described it's only a few hours away to rectify with no language difficulties. Thanks.

Be very careful, first of all you don't know what you are driving and secondly you have a problem getting back. I have just spoken to a mate who had just left a boat at Ushant, he had a hell of a job to get back to the UK as the Roscoff ferry isn't taking foot passengers so caught a train to Paris to get the Eurostar, got there and it was closed, train to Calais and again no foot passengers so caught a train to Lille then Eurostar back. Quite a tiring journey
