I'm a newbie
Morning funsters,

A couple of weeks ago, it was moho insurance renewal time and I took to t'interweb for quotes. I input my details with a specialised comparison site called Quotzone and received three fairly competitive quotes from three companies. I also received a number of calls from companies offering to help me claim compensation for injury/discomfort from an accident that I had to declare on the application. This was a no fault accident in another vehicle 8 months ago, but you still have to declare. These generous offers to claim compensation all started within an hour of submitting my application to Quotzone.
Quotzone have assured me that they did not sell my details and that they have contacted the three companies, 2Gether Insurance, Lifesure Group and Stavely Head who supplied quotes and they assure Quotzone that they did not sell them either...
The fact remains that my personal details were uploaded on to the list sold to call centre accident claim companies within an hour of me contacting Quotzone so be very careful who you share information with if you have been unfortunate enough to have been in an accident.

Quotezone have been asking me for ages to add a page on this site for "quotezone Motorhome Insurance". They say I will get a few shillings whenever someone fills the form. Warners use it and so do some of the big clubs. I did try it, got some good quotes and I did not get spammed, but I don't like the principal that you hand over your details and then someone calls you. They assure me that it is only the top three that will see my details and quote. I'm still umming and aahing about it but your post may have just made my mind up. I hate spam in all it's forms.

It does seem to be the way of the world now that information you give to other parties is shared..
Apart from accident claims, the one that I had bother with recently was hearing defect claims... as far as I know the only people I contacted was my doctor and the subsequent appointment for tests at a hospital... over the following months I got a few calls from people contacting me to see if I was eligible for compensation... it annoyed me and seemed like more than coincidence. .. but as I said seems so common now...

I am sick and tired of these calls .. it's going worse. Apparently my cheque is already issued in some instances for a claim I never made .. £3,860.00. They have no respect even when you tell them to remove your number from their list it STILL results in more calls.

Top three Jim? But then who do those top three sell your number to?

Yesterday alone I had seven such calls .. and no doubt will receive many more. I have to answer unknown numbers in case hospital or specialist calling. :(

Have use quotezone for motorbikes ,cars and motorhomes and of all the comparison sites they are better than others (imo)
have used 2gether on classic vehicles ,lousy customer service.

Lifesure (used to be MCIA) i believe now getting expensive I always use a email box set up for insurance quotes ,you know there is going to be lots of spam .and a mobile number for the cold callers "Is that JR?" no but Ill just get him and just put it on the side ,their expense, and they dont call again.
If i take out an insurance via them I change,i change email and contact details accordingly for the chosen company
works for me :D

Could you not just give the hospital/specialists etc; your mobile number rather than the house or is that what you meant .:(

I never give out my personal data to get quotes. They want to get back to me? I just close the page and move on

To get online quotes, a disposable spam email address, and an empty house up the road (same postal area), and if I don't like the quote, go elsewhere

BT call Guardian at home, and on our office line, unlisted number, separate "continental style" letter box beside the bin at the front, no letter slot in door, a friendly postman, medium high spam filter in operation, no need for housename on door, gated house and road leading to it, and blurred out house details on Google

Getting better
Ive found following unsolicited calls from accident claim companies that my best form of defence from future contact has been as follows:
Caller: I believe you've been involved in an accident?
Me: how did you know that as it only happened 20 minutes ago?
Caller: we have contact with all companies and work in your interest. Can you tell us what injuries you've suffered?
Me: Loss of one leg and an arm
Caller: all other information we would like to know:
Me: I'm sorry you'll have to call again as the surgeon has just informed me that he wants to sew my head back on before i continue this call
SILENCE. NO FUTURE CONTACT. I wonder why?

I tried telling them that I didn't feel it would be appropriate to make a claim as the other driver had died (not true) and I was being investigated by police(probably not true). That worked with the first 17 calls, then SA Solutions called.... He did not see anything amoral in profiting from a fatality!! When I told him that I had not been able to work since the accident(also not true), he helpfully suggested that I could use the money to go on a holiday, bless.

Slightly off topic.
I used a comparison site last year for car quote and later discovered that I had 17 markers on my credit score. It didn't affect my credit rating but it was explained to me that all the companies who quoted wanted to know if I was good enough for business. The markets still remain.

Settle in for the long haul. You will have ticked or not ticked a box somewhere agreeing that they can do whatever they like with your details.

We had a very low speed very minor nothing bump about 7 years ago.

Still get regular phone calls.

Going through the Insurance hoop now.
I actually listened to that 'boring' bit at the start of every call you make. You know the one where they threaten to deport you for life should you not tell the truth etc. etc.
In that blurb they actually tell you that they will farm out your details to everyone unless you tell them not to.
It's not couched that way, of course, but that's what they imply.
Even if you do tell them not to, who knows whether they will or not.

I use the free services of a company called " switchboard free".
I had to create a business name but you get and additional 0843 number to use on my landline and I keep this to give out when a company asks for my number . It rings with a different ring so you can ignore it if you wish
https://www.switchboardfree.co.uk/get-switchboardfree/?gclid=CLSottWLotQCFbYy0wodyGgAHw

They get a message saying something like " you are next in the queue" and it keeps them hanging on. I only give it to people I have no interest in speaking to.
You can redirect it to voicemail or more often they hang up.
You get an email or a message prompt telling you which number has been ringing you
It's totally free

Ever since lighting was by Calor gas.
When I go fishing online for quotes I use a false name so that when I get a call on my mobile asking for 'Mr Bonaparte', or 'Mr Hymer' or 'Mr Trump' I know exactly from whence it came. (But I do use a more convincing name than those!).

When I had a very serious not my fault pile-up on my motorbike (foreign lorry in U.K. cornering on the wrong side of the road in a narrow country lane) my solicitor intimated that insurance companies put their cases on a 'closed group' online site and subscribing solicitors bid the insurance companies for the business. (Allegedly).

Joy, are you getting these calls on a landline? At one stage we were pestered so much we bought the BT Call Guardian phones. People have to say who they are and you can accept or decline the calls, gets rid of all that stress, and you still get your important calls.

We eventually bought that very same phone, @houdini - peace perfect peace!

If I give our number out to anyone I WANT to call me, I pre-warn them it has Call Guardian so they'll have to say who they are then wait a mo whilst we accept their call.

Agree with this. When you agree to,their terms and conditions this is what you agree to.

This is what the terms and conditions of quotezone say
"
4.1 Comparison Services

If you request a quote comparison through our website, we will forward the personal information you submit to selected insurers, insurance brokers and other related third parties to enable us to obtain a quote for you.

The insurers may use your personal information for their own purposes, which may include contacting you by mail, telephone or email, and any use by these insurers will be subject to the insurers own terms and conditions and/or privacy policies. We cannot provide a quote comparison to you unless we are able to share your personal information in this way. In the event that none of the companies we forward your information to are able to provide an online quotation, we may pass on your contact details to a small number of companies who may be able to provide an offline quote"

Just don't give them your private phone number.

Well, Rita and I must be doing something right, as we don't get these types of calls at all...................nowadays.

We are ex directory, (as in number not available) and we are listed with the TPS (and the MPS). My elderly parents were harassed with cold callers, but wouldn't agree to go ex directory. I registered their number with the TPS, and within a few weeks, all went quiet for them. (y)
For those who might need their service................

http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/index.html

http://www.mpsonline.org.uk/mpsr/

It's only because of Rita's health issues that we answer "caller unknown" calls, as like @movan Joy, it's usually the hospital or Rita's specialist nurse phoning.

For online quotes, I only give out a secondary email address.

Cheers,

Jock. :)

No. I don't have a land line. The last company to pester me (last week) was Car Phone Warehouse... I said to the last caller that it was about 6 calls in 2 days and each time I requested my number to be removed from their system .. fingers crossed ... no calls this weekend.

It's nice to know that there plenty of us trying to stop the bar stewards selling me something I do not want
