No brainer if you have the room to fit one
I was asking myself that question two or three years back..
No downside apparent yet..

7 years followed by a break of 11 years and then 4+ years but given up now
It really does depend on your use of your van and to a lesser extent where you store it when it's not in use.

If you are always going to use sites with electric hook up and if you can store the van at home and "plug in" at home - and thus be able to keep the batteries fully charged - then IMO there is no need to have solar panels.

Extra battery first.
Then 100% a solar panel, I just cant see the sense of anyone not having one..
If cash is an issue there are many DIY self fit kits and lots of info here on Fun and other websites.

I'm fitting two 100watt just now, replacing the knackered 40watts that was there
If you plan to be off grid or not use ehu on site then as others have said it's a no brainer

It will all depend on how many Ah do you use (@ 12V) between top-ups. If you stay motionless without EHU for days on end, you may need a bigger battery bank or solar (so long as the sun shines). Moving around will top up the batteries from the alternator, so solar is much less important if you’re a tourer.

It depends entirely on how you intend to use your van. If you use sites all the time, with EHU, then no. If you never use sites then it is a must have. If, like us, you mainly use sites but occasionally just park up, then maybe. We used to use a site in the New Forest with no EHU, we found a 100w panel and 100Ah battery did very well in the summer, 10 days in fact and battery fully charged when we left.
