No I haven't wet my knickers! :D

I'm wanting to make a SOG for our camper, I've got the bits I need (fan, piping, electrics etc) but the question is where to put the vent pipe. I don't want to put it in the cassette locker door as I think they look naff and noticed that the Thetford version for our cassette (C200) is intended to go through the floor but being a PVC I don't really want to go drilling holes in the bottom and risk hitting the chassis etc!

I have noticed, however, that the boiler which is adjacent to the toilet compartment, has a drop vent under it so wondered about routing the vent pipe along from the cassette and out through that.

Can anyone see any issues with my doing this ... assuming the boiler doesn't malfunction and set the fumes alight! :D2

Wouldn’t dropping it down allow the smells to re enter the van.
Upwards would be better.
I do appreciate you don’t smell @Minxy Girl its the other half :)

Thetford version for our cassette (C200) is intended to go through the floor

just recently fitted a SOG for the C200 and the filter is in the door.. I honestly don't see anything naff about it .. but that's just my view..

I purchased it from CAK tanks.. was the cheapest I could find @ £125 +p/p https://www.soguk.co.uk/sog-type-b-kit-for-thetford-c200-cassettes/

I did consider the floor, but then the pipe and filter would obstruct the cassette when pulling it out ..

The kit does seem a bit pricy but it's very well designed and made with good quality parts.. it's easy to install as it comes with everything you need except the hole saw for the fan..

I priced up doing a DIY job, it's cheaper, but not by a huge amount .. micro-switch and mounting plate, hose, Thetford cassette adapter and hose, filter, quality fan etc.

If you go the DIY route through the floor will you fit the in-line carbon filter ?

Out door bits sell all the SOG spares.. parts that you may not be able to manufacture yourself.. link not allowed..

Our last two vans have had the SOG underfloor vent. It works well but you do need a good filter. Thev SOG green canister filters are expensive at 24 quid, I refill mine with active charcoal pellets and the filter two or three times a year.

If you go for a roof vent you don't need a filter but need to be careful with the piping run as with moisture drawn up into the pipe they start gurgling.

Probably not much use if converting your own but the cassette used in mine has a hole in the bottom with a valve. The filter sits in a recess in the base of the toilet and as the cassette is slid into place a protrusion on the filter opens the valve. The hole in the bottom of the cassette connects to a riser inside it and (I presume) another valve at the top of the riser opened by the action of the slide valve. The fan is in the base of the recess in which the filter sits.

My last Hymer with a bench loo I had an floor outlet SOG and it coupled into Thetford bottom tank outlet. Current van they put a hole in the top of the cassette(swivel bowl), probably because they fit the Thetford vent as standard. I didn't know that when I ordered the SOG and the van came with a bag of bits to enable fitting of the Thetford one.

Mine is the Thetford bottom outlet device - it isn't a bottom outlet SOG. I didn't know there was such a thing until I bought this van.

running a pipe out through the drop out will close the area of the drop out down considerably
Its more than big enough so no worry there and I'm not talking about a massive pipe.

On a mainly 'white box' it probably doesn't look that out of place due to all the other openings etc, but on a coloured PVC it wouldn't look pretty.

Why make life difficult? I think function should be more important than form.

Sog Door covers come in three standard colours

White / Light Grey / Dark Grey.

or you could spray it the same as your van.

That's the last resort but I'll have to convince hubby as he's dead set against one ... I wonder if there's a smaller version?

I wonder if there's a smaller version?

don't think so..

the inlet to the filter from the fan is at the top, the gas flows vertically down the filter and out at the bottom .. a smaller cover would mean a smaller filter..

if you look at the first two photos you can see the fan position relevant to the filter housing..

but no doubt it could be done .. but wouldn't be as efficient at removing the smell

Through the floor or roof vent work far better than the door vent.

was only answering this question... >

offering an option to a white filter housing

Minxy, have you ever parked next to a motorhome with one? not pleasant hope your loo is not at the same side as your awning ;)

I am liking the idea of a SOG system in our van. Are you using SOG components or substitutes? If substitutes, what are you using? I've ruled out a roof vent as it would be right next to the loo's Heki skylight. I prefer the floor vent option, but don't like the floor vent filter prices. Wondering about cutting open a SOG filter and refilling it or making up a unit from pipework or similar and filling that. SOG fans are also very expensive.

You only need to buy one floor filter. Removing adhesive tape allows you to split the filter & refill with cheaper filter medium of your choice. There's plenty of room inside the filter box.

Last 2 vans have had the floor vent SOG. Easy to refill, I cut a 21mm hole in the side emptied out the charcoal and refilled with active charcoal, stopped the hole with a cut down wine bottle cork.
Every van we have had has had a SOG although they say change the filter once a year we have found to reduce external smells you need to change them 2 or 3 times a year. Costs £3-£4 to refill compared to £24 for a filter.

No worry with filters now I've converted mine to a roof vent. Can get the amomia wiff through the loo roof vent with the wind in the wrong direction but if it's windy just close the vent while in the loo.
