today I received a sog kit to fit. Its the type that goes thru the cassette door there is a micro switch that fits to the underside of the bowl
so that when you flush it starts a fun. to me it does'nt seem to run long enough to do any good. would'nt it be better surely if it ran longer

I thought the fan started once the slider blade was opened and stopped when it was shut again. Not heard of one thats linked to the flush.

yes it runs when the slider blade is open but who leaves that open for longer than necessary

Mine starts the fan on moving the slider blade.

I would have thought that would have been sufficiently long enough but suppose you could leave it slightly open if you did a real stinky one.(y) ;)

The thetford wc ventilation kit we have runs on a timer for a predetermined time the kit comes with a replacement pcb flush facia unit . It's also possible to run the fan without a flush no need to open the cassette blade at all .

I find my SOG really effective, it stops the smells escaping from the cassette. It only needs to run while the blade is open to make sure the smells are contained and sucking against a closed blade will achieve nothing, the cassette is effectively room sealed at that point. Perhaps you need an extractor fan if you want remove air from the toilet compartment.

Not to get too descriptive but when we use ours we’re open the blade before we start and close out after flushing. That way the SOG is always working when we use it.

Mine on the 2019 autotrail ran when the flush was pressed and for about 5 mins.
I sometimes used to press the flush for a slight second to switch it on before opening the blade, and hope i didnt get sucked out. ::bigsmile:

I made and fitted my own version, an 80mm fan and a timer switch operated by the flush button, it is set to about 20minutes. Cost about £5.

SOG doesn’t need to operate when the blade is closed.

Surely The cassette is a sealed container so the only way you will extract fumes from it is to allow fresh air to enter I.e. via cassette blade...so IMV there is no point running fan once blade shut and making the cassette once again sealed... all you will do is to try and create a vacuum inside cassette.

I've connected it to the water pump wires which pass through the cassette opening.
so it comes on when the water pump runs

The fan should start when you open the slider and stop when you shut the slider.
There is no point for the fan to run after the slider is shut as there is no where for the fan to suck from.
I can’t see any point in the fan running purely when you flush, it should run the whole time you re busy on the pot!

I agree. It is a much cleaner operation if you leave blade open when doing your business so you need the fan running all the time blade open to exclude smells especially if not using chemicals. It draws air our from the washroom preventing smells going into the MH and it also maximises the time oxygen in the air is drawn into the cassette aiding the breakdown process.

That's the way we use it too. You can leave the slider open and the fan on on for a short while, for example while washing your hands, so it acts to some extent as an extractor for smells.

If your fan is wired into, and only on, when your water pump is activated then its probably not working as it should. A few bursts on the flush button to wash things away wont let your fan draw away any pongs. Really needs to run for the entire time that the blade is open

Thetfords ventilation kit has a fan overrun timer built in I guess they have designed that for a purpose so not sure if the blade should be left open or closed ? I thought closed after use with fan still running on , otherwise it may be forgotten and remain open after the fan stops leaving odours to escape !

Definitely incorrectly wired.

Correct me if I am wrong but having looked at the installation instructions it seems to me that the Thetford kit draws air out of the compartment that holds the cassette rather than directly from the cassette itself. If so then it is not the same thing as a SOG. I may well have misunderstood the instructions.

No it draws the air from the underside of the cassette, certainly on the c250/260

Interesting, thanks. How does it connect to the inside of the cassette to draw the air out?

I think it’s a non return valve that exits at the bottom of the cassette ,and the exit opening sits on top of the fan unit

I've fitted it and it only runs while the slider is open which to me doesnt seem long enough
