Or is that rubbish?
im sure I remember this but i've not been there for several years and it was on a lads week away so I probably didnt pay attention?

Any real world tips and tricks for France?

Same applies in the UK. Eat in ,costs more, takeaways are less.
??
Glass of wine , drink in, is the same price as a supermarket bottle .You are paying extra for the ambiance.
But whatever you do don't sit out at the waterside in Honfluer ,unless you have a friendly bank manager with you

Fair enough, I thought I remembered something specific about ordering at the counter though vs taking a table and ordering

I think that applies a bit more to Italy and in the big cities. However the amount of coffee you get is not worth sitting down for :whistle2:

Not sure about the coffee bit, but apparently the "hover & squats" are free, but the sitter downers aren't.

We've always had a great welcome at the PMU's in France.

Basically PMU's are a cross between Rene's in 'Allo 'Allo! and a William Hill betting shop.
A PMU is always our choice of bar. We did get a bit snobby in Arras last week, it really really was a cross between a backwater spit and sawdust local and the bookies in Snatch.

You sometimes see higher prices for service on the "terrace" but as mentioned I've seen this more in Italy but no doubt it applies in the fleshpots of France. :)

I wouldn't let it put you off. Being stung is all part of the experience. :)

Best tip is just keep driving south east until you get to Italy. France and coffee are two words I’ve never been able to associate with each other…

Sounds interesting ::bigsmile:

Walked into a Gelato Place in Taormina, Sicily, fantastic range of flavours, large multi flavoured one 4 Euros.(y)
Ordered my choices, and was then told "Sit!", "Sit!" I bring it out to you!.
Sat outside on narrow pavement table for two, Gelato was delivered to me 8.5 Euros inc service charge, didnt even get my bread basket & jug of water.:giggle:
I thought Cheeky Beggar, so I sat people watching long enough to say, I warmed the seat!

Don’t sit down for a coffee at a table that is covered with a table cloth - it’s meant for eating on, and they don’t like it if you only order a coffee!

I wonder how a French Coffee/restaurant place would react, if you sat at a table with your beer or coffee, asked for the wi-fi log in, rolled out your laptop to catch up on The Fun Forum, Search for sites maybe, until the dinner menu was offered?, that of course is assuming they didnt close up all afternoon. :giggle:
Can you also plug in my 3KW Eco Flow power unit, its getting a bit low?:imoutahere:

Coffee varies enormously in France depending on how much chicory is in it.
Where as in Spain never had a bad cup.

Dunno, threads drifted into a coffee thread for some reason, I was asking for general tips and used going for coffee as example ie "such as" but youre right about costa, its horrible coffee.

Don't order at the counter and then sit outside.o_O
Tips are expected, around 10% seems OK.
Coffee usually seems to cost more than wine. In anywhere that isn't full of bits don't order a cafe au lait you will possibly end up with a cup the size of a cereal bowl nearly all milk.
