Motorhome since 2014, Caravan previously.
Watched the sun go down looking across to Noirmoutier this evening. Proper summer weather.
Why can’t we have these facilities in the UK. €5.90 for the night!

We've been here just short of a week so far spent nothing at all on aires (all free) 4.90 euro on two dump and fills. France is motorhome heaven compared to the UK. So civilised.

We use Aires as a free overnight stop when on the way somewhere so don't give a toss who's next to us or how far they are away (as long as I can open the door 😆) don't care if their door is facing ours either. If you expect them to be like a free camp site you're going to be dissapointed.

We're at a paid aire in Spain now so it's spaced out and nicer. It's near the beach too so we might stay 2 nights 🏖️😎

We use aires a lot. But we don't sit around outside with a windbreak to mark off our little bit etc even if we're on a site. Depends how you use your MH to us it's mostly a place to eat and sleep. Each to their own

I live here and that would be my idea of hell too. Would be looking for an aire with more space paid or not !
It's a camp site for you then, ACSI ones are good 👍

Yup
my idea of hell
Glad I have sold it, glad we never went across the channel
Then you don't know what you missed, that picture would put me off too, but I know that there are hundreds of aires that are not crowded at all.

Just one of many we have stayed at.

I will second what spitfire has said. There are many aires in good locations which are not just on a dusty car park ( we have used them when convenient) Boisse Penchot is a reasonable example taken, as you can see, from the campingcar-infos web site. Room for 8 camping cars, well spaced out, but with the dusty car park option out of sight to the left of the photo. Good resto just up the hill from the parking.

Thing is if you are just travelling and in a bit of a hurry which many are if not retired it doesn't matter if you just need an overnight stay.BUSBY.

Personally it strikes me as odd to own a motorhome and never get more than 200 miles from home.

Yes, it rather misses the whole point, well for me anyway. The ability to stray way out of your comfort-zone and discover new people and places whilst still keeping your home comforts. Sigh, each to their own I guess. Fact is we enjoy it so much we can’t see why anyone else wouldn’t!!

Surely it is a matter of personal choice what one does with ones motorhome?

Why is that odd?

Perhaps it’s more odd to comment on how other people choose to use their motorhome.

Even in an Aire, I would not want my van so close to someone else’s. Fire risk.

This thread got my attention with the headline ‘so great to be back in France’ I want to go as soon as I can

it’s a shame that headline hasn’t lived up to its billing, through no fault of the original poster.

Taken over by a load of squabbling about aires.

My idea of hell. Never really understood the 'pay fortune for motorhome and scrimp on hols by staying in Aires as cheaply as possible' mindset. Campsites are really reasonable in France, especially using ACSI card. Swimming pools, beaches, quiet sites, cycling sites, something for all. Leaving your gear out as the security is so good is a bonus. We use motorway Aires to get our head down for a few hours on the way down south and the odd aire if we're visiting a town or village for the night. Otherwise, saving money has no place on our family hols, it's a time to enjoy. Different if you're full-time.

using aires to me is the location not if they are free. We have stopped in some wonderful aires and seen some lovely towns and villages we would of missed if we were on a campsite in the middle of nowhere.
Everyone enjoys there Motorhomes in different ways, that is the diversity of touring in them!(y)

Search for sites (use the Web page it's free) or park4night are the main ones.

One reason may be because they have the room. 10 times the geographical size of the UK with the same size population of the UK. Plus the French won't pay. ::bigsmile:

Each to their own, I'm at our static van about an hour away from the OP. Weather's superb, supermarkets are brim full of food and the bars have all their beers available.

Some of the views expressed on this post are just unnecessary. I get as much enjoyment from taking my MoHo to a New Forest car park 3.5 miles from home as I do when I've driven it 500 miles or more.

Is there an app or a website that lists Aires?
We use Camper Contact app. Lots a lot of aires and service areas. We tend to use aires for short stop overs of one maybe two nights in some locations (edges of cities etc) or when on route and they are easy to find using the app. It also lists a number of campsites too.

Very interesting to see the response to my original post and the polar opposites of members opinions.
I agree that the picture does show a line of us all together but this was a beautiful location for an overnight stop on the way to our campsite for the next week in the Vendée.
We love the French aires with the opportunity to meet and chat with so many different nationalities, yes some are more spacious than others and we love the convenience of not having to book in advance and the freedom they offer.

Nothing whatsoever to do with saving money!
We have stayed on some lovely aires, some free some paid for, simply because they have been where we want to be.
We rarely stay anywhere for more than a few days.

Here's another awful aire...

Have you noticed or is it just me……a fair few threads I’ve been reading recently have become very hostile, very quickly for no real reason? 🤷‍♂️

Lockdown fever , it’s becoming antisocial to actually enjoy yourself.
