Snow chains

Hiya funsters,can anyone confirm please...is it law to have to carry snow chains or fit winter tyres when driving in France. Thank you in advance

Snow chains

We are driving thro France in to Spain begin of March, is it compulsory to carry snow chains even we do not intend to go in to any mountainous areas. Thank

"To improve road traffic in mountainous areas and the safety of users, it is mandatory to equip your vehicle with winter tyres or to hold snow chains or socks of the 1to November 2022 to March 31, 2023 in certain mountainous areas." That from here. There is a downloadable list of the 'certain mountainous areas' but you need to know your french areas well to see if you're affected. I'm going down next week so I'm going to have to buy some snow chains, which I'll probably never have to use.

They'll probably also get you off a wet grass or muddy pitch on a slope in the UK....
