I just wonder what would really happen if all the smokers in the UK actually gave up.

The government have to be seen to be doing something about smoking, but lets be really honest and brutal

If all smokers quit, the government would be in the sh1t as the public would revolt at the new tax laws that the government would have to bring in to replace the taxes lost on smoking - they are already having problems due to the decline in smokers and other tax income such as from the housing market, because they have just increased government borrowing !!!!!

For smokers who are addicted they have no choice but to buy cigarettes which incur a fantastic tax return for the government.

I was also wondering how much the NHS would save on smoking related illnesses if all the smokers in the UK gave up.

It would obviously be a more long term thing - not as immediate as the loss of revenue from the tax on cigarettes.

Interesting though to compare the two.

From statistical point of view there is more of the NHS budget spent on drink related illness than tobacco, but once they have got us all ex-smokers they can then concentrate on the alcohol related illness and use the ex-smokers as the example of how to give up, maybe by that time they will have even found a cure for old age or maybe death only thing is they say we are living to long nowadays and that is putting a strain on the country too, The lunatics now have full control of the Asylum.:ROFLMAO:

I read a couple of years ago in one of the national newspapers that only 4p in the £ of the total tax revenue for cigarrettes goes towards the NHS which includes smoking related illnesses. Any ideas where the rest of it goes

I gave up smoking on the 11th April 2007 (474 days ago, yes I am counting).
I had smoked for about 35 years and enjlyed each and every fag, but when I started smoking fags were 26p for 20. The last time I bought some they were £5.36.
Since I have given up smoking I have developed asthma, now under control.

Anyhow, during that 474 days I have not spent £2,540.64 and more importantly if I had smoked during those 474 days, based on 1 fag every 3 mins, then I would have spent 19.75 days smoking 24hrs a day...

Do I regret ever starting? Yes.
Do I resent this Government taxing us to death. Yes.
Is it time to start a revolution? Yes.

Piggy Bank for MP's pensions and paying for their freebies.

examples;
Does David Cameron pay his mortgage?

Nooooooooooooo!! He claims it back from us.

Did Tony Blair have to buy a TV licence like the rest of us mere mortals are constantly being reminded we had better pay up or else?

Nooooooooooooo!! He claimed it back from us!

Funny isn't it how those more than able to pay their own way in society don't, but choose instead to leech off the backs of the less well off instead.

Quite right Jim, Having got heart disease that's caused by passive smoking, according to my specialist, is bad enough. But the true friends that iv'e lost along the way, because it only happens to others, still hurts. Whils't in the cardiac ward the specialist came to see three of his patients. Looking out of the window he started cussing. They were out in the glass tunnel between the last two doors smoking away. Would you mind if I waited with you he asked. fine I said. On their return he said good news lads. I have sorted your pills, and you are home tomorrow. Sod them he said we arn't waisting anymore of our short funds on them.
But on the bright side as iv'e never smoked I can afford a motorhome.

Graham.

When the smoking ban first came in the police were pulling over white van man who were smoking in their vans, and fineing them,.

However I remember a van driver doing his nut on the radio, he'd been fined as he pulled off a supermarket carpark, and whilst he was been written his ticket, a taxi driver drove past with a fag on, (he said he was a paki) he pointed this out to the copper, who said today we are concentrating on vans, but he is private hire not blackcab and therefore not applicable for this particular law.

Think if i'd have been him i'd have done my nut too

Have you ever seen a driver looking for the hot tip of his cigarette that he is now sitting on? I have and done it in the passed.

Believe me when it happens the driver is not in control of the vehicle, a good reason to ban smoking for the drivers but not the passengers.

Been there, done that. Now an ex smoker for about 25 years.:thumb:

It is time for an even playing field however. Ban smoking in ALL vehicles would sort that.

Hi Doug

The police can't/don't enforce the mobile phone laws, far more dangerous than smoking , I see them everyday yapping away while driving, Nokia glued to ear..

Do we then go on to ban Sat navs, radios, ipods etc .. ?

As the law stands, you can still be done for driving without due care and attention.. a catch all for any misdemeanour while driving, ( use your imagination :roflmto: ) I believe someone was 'done' for eating a KitKat using that regulation ... where do you draw the line .. I see no need for more regulations.

smoke on

i would rather the police catch the burgulars that we had not long ago who not only wrecked my home they beat my dog so much he wouldnt come near me for 3 days, they stole my sons newish car (I eventually found that not the police 6 days later on the main road 5 miles out of town) and was partly the reason why we have sold up + moved. I would rather the police arrest + charge the binge drinkers that are ruining my town (charge them the cost of hospital treatment + the cost of cleaning up of our streets due to their behaviour), yes i had a childhood + i had my wild nights on the town but never needed hospital treatment or terrorised others but i now seem to be more of a "Public Enemy" than the all because i smoke.
I + friends of ours every Saturday visited our local pub for a bar meal, lots of drink + listen to the group/band playing that night, we would spend £150.00 + between us (we now Smoke/Drink at each others houses), there was "Smoking" + "No Smoking" areas but many times while looking for a table/tables in the "Smoking Area" we found it to be full by many "Non Smokers", funny how it never bothered them when it suited them, when they needed a seat but when the ban came in they where all posible victims of passive smoking. I/we have visited the pub 3 times since the smoking ban came into force as i refuse to hand my money over + be told i must sit outside in the wind, rain, sleet or snow when i choose to light up. I dont blame the "Pub Landlord" i feel sorry for him as its his livelyhood its affecting (how much alone has he lost on me + my friends alone ?)
Leave us Smokers Alone, bring back the "Pub Smoke Room" then the non smokers will still have thier clean air but i get the feeling many off them would be upset because they would have to find something else to moan about.
Lets get our Laws that really affect us all sorted out, a life sentance should mean life, no slap on the wrist or ASBO's give them what they deserve + what we the public want to see given, get the police + magistrates to clean up our streets + make them safe to walk again rather than chase the "Smoker".
Well thats my rant over, sorry if my spelling isnt up to scratch but my hands are shaking as i havent had a fag since i started typing this + i'm gagging for 1 (or 2).

SMOKERS UNITE (it worked for the Poll Tax)
