Android is an operating system which is used on some smart phones (and other appliances) but not all of them.

Smartphone is a generic term for devices which have extra functionality. See the Wiki for further detail.

As GK says.. I have a Smart fone that is running Android.. It is a bit like buying a computer and then deciding if you want to run an MS Windows product or perhaps something like Linux on it..

The equivalent of the programs you load on it are called apps on the fones ( short for applications )

And I have a smart running Windows.

They are now on Windows 7 for phones/tablets and because it's a clash of the titans M$ will be pulling out all the stops to better Google.

M$ dare not dismiss it as "just phones" because if it lets Google win phones the next Google target will be the desktop. At the moment Google had paused the desktop attack and is throwing everything into winning the phone/tablet war, understandable because that is The Future of mass sales.

Interesting times.

And I have a smart running Windows.
