hi all. I know this has probably been asked before, so here it comes again. is it ok to tow a smart car without causing damage to the auto box? I have seen conflicting answers. so has anyone out there got one which they tow ?. any problems ? any advise would be great.

Well that would depend entirely on the year of the Smarty
Pre 2008 and they are not a true auto box but an electronically controlled manual.. So pre 2008 you put it in neutral and away you go

As per the other Replies. But with a caveat, I had a 2002, which blew the engine/gearbox. the cause was never fully determined, but suspicion fell upon the fact that I had previously experienced "FALSE" neutrals. (the day it happened BOTH my wife and I had seen the "0" (neutral) displayed on screen.). It is my opinion that there can be issues with the gearbox "Brain". The vehicle had also, it was subsequently found, had a full new (auto) "clutch" pack fitted by a previous owner, which may (or not) have had some bearing?.

Hi,Smart - Toyota IQ I have both in different locations and though l love the Smart the IQ is my Mistress it's far better. If you haven't committed to the Smart take a look, it's a proper Car and similar in weights/dimensions but superior with a real Autobox.

thanks for all your comments, i'v given the smart a miss and today I dipped into the retirement fund and purchased a manual citroen c1 complete with braked A frame...( I can hear the groans) , but its a nice little car and is well looked after with low mileage. all I have to do now is learn to tow !! wish me luck
