Having recently joined the funster club and being new to motorhoming I'd be interested in thoughts on the ideal MH size from other funsters, particualrly those that have tried different options/sizes? We opted for a tag axle with big U lounge for comfort and inside space...

How long is a piece of string? It entirely depends on how you intend to you use it.

We had a 5.4m panel van for several years and it was great for getting into city centres as you could generally park it in a car parking space.

I'm in the process of changing it to a 6m motorhome. But 6m is the limit on my driveway (actually it's about 5.8m, I'm hoping the neighbours won't complain). It's got a large lounge, but very little garage and a drop-down bed. Compromise. I'm expecting to find it harder to park, but it's a trade-off. I'm still intending to drive into towns with it, I'll just need to plan better to make sure there's somewhere for it before I arrive and be prepared to turn around if there's no space.

Others have larger motorhomes with a scooter or massive coach class motorhomes and tow/carry a small car.

Small on the outside and big on the inside, anything else is a compromise, we are 8.7m so could be considered quite large but still get it where we want to be or do we want to be where we can get it?

We're 5.99m but have a good sized u shaped lounge area [Practical Motorhome Review suggested you could squeeze 6 adults in, as long as the breathing rota was observed ...] and a drop down bed that sits over the lounge area. The compromise is when we both leave the bed at the same time, because 1 has to take a sharp right into the kitchen area, to allow the other to open the bathroom door ... All a bit 'shall we dance?'/'change partners' routine. But we're happy with the layout, accepting that, were we to change, we would face other compromises.

Steve

Under, 5 meters long, 1,8 meters high, and 1.9 meters wide, with huge ground clearance, and 4 wheel drive. Also twin length fixed beds, separated shower in bathroom, and a big garage.

Let me know if you can find it, I couldn’t.

Before we bought our first Motorhome and were living in Spain we had many campers on our prom over winter. One Dutch couple in their 80’s we saw for a second winter & knowing they would speak good English we got talking to them. I was keen to learn all about their lifestyle. They had spent the last 25 years doing this every year from October to April. I asked what was the best size van to get and they said 6.5m was the optimum size for room to live in it and being able to get it almost anywhere. I cannot remember much about what van they had at the time but remember it had a fixed rear bed above a garage for storage. We later bought ours at 7.5m & 4005kg (8m with bike rack) with fixed bed over large garage and whilst great for space it made it a bit more problematic for getting everywhere. We are now awaiting a 6.4m 3500kg PVC so we can get everywhere & will make the compromises needed 😊

Sounds perfect. :giggle:

All choices are a compromise. We prefer large in fact after years of motor homing the larger the better for me. It has its problems parking, running costs etc. I can only assume small is just that. Small. So the answer to the original question is medium will be the preferred choice for most funsters. The real question is "whats right for you"

Even big ones are small inside when you compare to most homes. Hopefully with good weather you spend more time outside. Plus a little awning can help.
We’re 6m but having a fixed bed and front living area means one can lie in whilst the other is up. We spent a couple of days holed up whilst we were poorly, and I was able to stay in bed whilst my wife could get up and potter. If you have a lounge/bed it’s not so easy.

There will always be a compromise.
I was once told that you can be 100% happy with 2 of the following but rarely all 3.
You therefore need to decide which 2 are the most important -
1)Living (larger is better)
2)Driving (smaller is better)
3)Sleeping (fixed bed is better but reduces living area)
In our case (Adria Compact SC) we are very happy with (2) & (3) but (1) is a bit of a compromise.

I would concur that around 6.5M x 2.0/2.2M is optimum. It's just about as big as you can go and still get into most parking spaces. It also means you have a fighting chance of staying under 3500Kg with the advantages that that brings in accessing some roads. Everything comes with drawbacks. It's a case of picking what's important to you.

We're trying to get our 3rd motorhome the first time around. I think everyone has their own requirements, for us, it's 6m, U shape lounge, 4x4 & very low key. I'd have though if you will spend most of the time on campsites, then size becomes not so much of an issue.

6.4 mtr Autotrail Tracker, end kitchen.
2 side benches ( can seat 4 on each) makes into a king size bed crossways and 2 more people on the driver and passenger seats. Just in case we get sociable..
Internal room is important for us and I can park “Anything “.

If you spend most of your time off-sites size is less of an issue - because there is nobody to dictate size.

I didn't explain myself properly. I'm aimign to spend zero ties on a site. This means that the van has to be low profile & not really stand out as the regular recognisable motorhome. 6m & a dark colour is nice to hide away somewhere. Also, it fits through my gate -which is always handy.
On the other side look at those huge motorhomes that you need a HGV to drive. Where do people put them?
