I’ve never been but have the opportunity to go with work, flying, not in MH.
I think we’ll have a day off to visit the country … interested in hearing from anyone who has visited, particularly in February.
I’m realistic and know our actual chances of travel are fairly slim due to CV19 but I would have kicked myself if I hadn’t signed up and missed it.

I haven't been there in winter but would guess that the nicest place to go to from the capital, Ljubljana is Lake Bled - around 80 mins drive away. I've no idea what would be open re cafes etc but the area is quite sophisticated so you'll probably find some posh places to have a coffee.

I suppose it'll depend on where you're starting from and how you plan to travel. There is some fantastic scenery in Slovenia but much of it is in the mountains and possibly not accessible to you unless you have a 4x4.
Lake Bled and Ljubljana are both worth a visit and Ljubljana may be the most accessible in winter ?

I think John and Mandy on youtube are in Slovenia atm or were the other day, I know it’s not Feb but they said they were blown away with the country and it’s stunning views

I wish we went in February, 😉 then Janie wouldn't have been in swimming and caught something like typhoid. 🙄🤔🙂 Bob

We had a few days staying at Ljubljana fire station whilst cycling from Yorkshire to Sarajevo in 96. I would like to go back. I remember it being a very nice city to visit.

We're not posh enough to stay or swim in Lake Bled... We stayed further long the valley at Lake Bohinj where typhoid would have been extra ;)

It is some years since I went on a skiing holiday in Bled, Slovenia. It is a very beautiful country, but not much snow at the time. It reminded me of its neighbour Austria, but had a rather lower cost of living.

We have been at Christmas once and then at February half term for skiing. Both times around Bled. Beautiful but obviously cold and snowy. Nice coffee and cake!

I think pur partner school is in Ljubljana so we should get to see the city. We will have to fly via a 3rd country - either via Venice or Zagreb. It could be interesting.

Two of our children have visited Ljubljana and other bits of the country more recently and thoroughly enjoyed it. Admittedly both visited in the summer but said the city was beautiful, loads of eating places, heavy on the meat though.they’re veggie so not as easy other than Italian!

Have a great time.

Thanks carolyn … I’m veggie too so might be coffee and cake three times a day!

I could do that no problem! My son is a vegan so I think he struggled a bit but Claire was quite happy eating pizza or pasta every day. Mind you she wasn’t on as tight a budget as Mike, he was staying in hostels so he and his friend did some self catering.

We have friends who live in Ljubljana and we've visited a couple of times, it really is a stunning little city. In summer you can be sitting in the city looking at the mountains with snow on them, loads of lovely places to eat and drink and go a walk up to the castle. Lake Bled is worth a visit if you have time.

I went to Maribor to watch the mighty Aberdeen F.C play. Great pubs, food and nightlife.

The train from Ljubljana to Maribor takes you through some simply stunning scenery and it's restaurant car puts the dry sandwich and warm tin of tennents from scotrail to shame.

Order a pork schnitzel, cold beer and watch the mountains roll by.

It will be cold but it is a lovely country and the people ( we met ) are really nice and welcoming.. Def worth the trip
We have two motorcycle meets to attend in August that are close to Garda, but they are two weeks apart
Chances are we will do the first one, shoot over to Slovenia and then return for the second

And Ljubljana is a wonderful city for walkies and pointing.

We (three blokes) really enjoyed the food, good solid meaty dishes. Can’t comment on the cakes as I don’t eat them. We were cycling approx 100 miles per day and really appreciated the protein on our only rest days. Can’t comment on the hotels etc as we were staying at the fire station. I would like to return, possibly by motorcycle. Hmm.

Do you ski? If so, Kranska Gora would be worth a trip and there is a regular bus service from Lublijana. Lublijana is beautiful and a very nice place to spend time. Re. the food, yes, they are good on meaty things but unusually for a slovene country they also really like their salads ands veggies, so it's a also good place if you're not a carnivore.

Grianan We have been and love Ljubljana. It’s a beautiful oldy world city with beautiful walks around old streets and by the river. It is so nice we’ve said if we’re ever within passing distance we would always go stay for a few days. It is a university city too so plenty of pleasant youth about which gives it a vibrant feeling. English is very widely spoken, in fact we did not speak with anyone who couldn’t, so language was not a problem for us.

We have also visited and stayed at Lake Bled. The walk around the lake and the views are what make it. Yes it was very beautiful but other than the scenery there was nothing else to speak of. Very popular with tourists, particularly foreigners. We even met Americans there.

After leaving Bled we drove on the minor roads to Italy and the views we had of the National Park have tempted us to return one day just to walk in the park it looked so beautifu.

Never been in February but I think we would enjoy visiting at any time of year with the right clothing.

If you do go to Bled, there is a very nice gorge walk just to the north west of Bled Village - the Vintgar Gorge. It's about 4km on well constructed and waymarked paths and is much more interesting than just going round the lake. However, the website shows it as closed at the moment with no indication of when it may re-open

I it a good idea to be travelling abroad with the Delta Covid 19 cases rising in Europe especially if you haven't had the Booster Jab Booster jab gives you around 90% protection , 2 jabs gives you around 63% protection plus there's enough people here in the UK spreading it !!
