So thinking of using standard sla leisure batteries with a breather pipe in my van in a purpose made battery box. Using some decent batteries anyone still use standard sla batteries can anyone for see any problems or recommend batteries or should I just bite the bullet and shell out for gels ect thanks in advance

Hankook 110 or 120amp batteries seem to get recommended a lot on here. Most recommendations seems to be for standard sealed acid or Lithium if you have weight issues and deep pockets.🙂

Equivalent 150 amp lithium will be roughly a third of the weight and around two to two and a half times the cost. It also depends what you intend to power as the Lithiums will charge much quicker and supply far more power. Really depends on the sort of camping you intend to do.

We used grunt lead acid (2x105Ah) with 2x180W solar and 2xÂŁ5 PWM controllers last year for 5 months off grid in fairly sunny France with no problems. Didn't need to hook up to EHU or drive to charge so a little bit sceptical about upgrading to anything posher.

That much solar in a sunny summer will keep most vans going. However if your using your van all year the solar won't supply much on a dark wet winter day, then there are other considerations.

Even the best solar and battery / controller setup won't help much in winter.
