Morning funsters going to remove Air con from our Rapido and fit skylight in it place So I need to enlarge the 400 X 400 hole in the roof to accommodate the new skylight as anyone done this before on a coachbuilt motorhome ( not a pv van) look forward to any good constructive comments

It depends on what you intend to fit. 400 x 400 is the most common size of rooflight so if you don't wish to enlarge the hole there's a lot of choice. If your intention is to fit something larger you won't go far wrong with one of the Hekis.

If You enlarge the hole to fit a bigger skylight You need to snug fit wooden battens around the new hole otherwise it will crush the insulation etc when you tighten the screws.

is there anything I really have to look out for

That question was not put very well what I meant to say was apart from electric cables was there anything else in the roof to look out for

You normally drill the 4 corners of the hole to stop stress cracks at the corners. Measure inside and outside. Put load spreaders on the roof. De-grease properly. Use bedding tape and just seal around the skylight, otherwise You will never get it out again if You sikaflex it in. Aldi sell a good multi-tool to cut the hole if it is not steel that you are cutting. I use a 1MM grinding disc on a steel roof if I am fitting a skylight in a Sprinter etc. Don't fit the skylight the wrong way around { that happens a lot }.

Hi Machsoneman I thoought that was the Idea to seal it in for good can you also explain what bedding tape is and where Will I get it from if that is the way to do it thanks

It's mastic on a roll. Once the skylight is fitted using the bedding tape and screwed down tight you finally go around the outside skylight edges with sikaflex .If in the future you need to remove the skylight you won't need a lump hammer. That's the way they should be fitted. Some people use mastic etc.
Diamond Dave on Youtube has done a video on removing and fitting a skylight.

Hi marchzoneman what do you mean when you say don't fit the skylight the wrong way round also what is the tool called from Aldi that you mentioned thanks ( John ) Boathouse 52

You need to be careful what you cut through if you enlarge the opening, they may well be some roof supports each size of the existing opening, also electic cables. I fitted an aerial to a Burstner a few years ago and although I only drilled a 25 dia hole I mange to go through a cable.

So I have got an existing 400x400 hole are you saying if I extend that to 600x 890 I could be in trouble I know where the electric cables in the roof are

Vibrating saw blade.

Sometimes people fit the roof skylights so that when the skylight is raised the wind rips it off because it has been fitted the wrong way.
