Ok people, we have a Sky HD box at home and dear old Mr Murdoch's crew keep trying to get me to change to a Sky Q box for no extra charge. Now, that would seem ideal except that we also have a Sky HD box in the motorhome and I take the card from the home box, pop it into the motorhome box and pair it up. All works well when away, again, again, and when we get home, I return the card to its original box and pair it back.

Here comes the simple question ................ If we were to subscribe and swap over to a Sky Q box at home, would the Q box card work in the Motorhome HD box ?

YES or NO, I need a definitive answer or there could be a bit of a cock up.

I would be grateful if someone who has tried it, done it, could let me know. I can't get a straight answer out of Sky despite asking several times, which means either they don't know or are simply not saying. Thank you. :lips:

I think the Sky Q LNB on the dish makes it different to the requirements on an HD box so doesn't work. Well that's what the installer said to me when we got the Sky Q box that's now gone back.

Thank you, I know you can't swap boxes etc because the LNB's and the need for a solid internet connection with the Q box, but can you just swap the card as per my description ? YES or No. :mask:

No idea SM as didn't try it because of what the installer said.
Have now went back to VM.
Just a thought, if you set up series recordings on Sky Q box (you get up to 6 concurrent) if you take the card out it won't record. Might not be an issue for you though?

When we went over to Sky Q last year from Sky HD we got a new card, so almost certainly the answer is no.

Have tried a Sky Q card in a Sky HD box and it does not work. The experiment was done on a Maxview Sky Q compatible system which of course works fine with a Sky Q receiver and card. The same satellite system can be used with a Sky HD box but we were unable to use the Sky Q card in the HD receiver. Sky HD or any freeview or freesat receiver works fine using the Sky Q Maxview satellite as you only need one of the four LNB feeds for the receiver input. It’s the other way round that is incompatible i.e unable to use Sky Q receiver on a standard satellite system.

No it doesn't and if you change then you will no longer be able to access any recordings on your old box if they were from any of the subscription based channels as it is deemed a new subscription and the old one is ended for you by Sky so make sure you watch anything you have recorded before you swap.

i understand its down the lnb. so why dont you try your sky hd box at home with the q card inserted. if it works, you 'just' need to change your lnb on the motorhome sat dish

i dont know the answer, but you might be able to inform everyone else?

That's the point I have not yet subscribed to Sky Q and before I do I need a definitive answer to my question.

That would mean SM would have to sign up for a new contract with a Q box and potentially lose all HD recordings. If it doesn't work he could potential lose more than that but that might please the very old mo!. :whistle2:

edit, obviously crossed!

You can not simply change the lnb from a single or double LNB to Quad LNB. the satellite system needs the software to process the Sky Q signal. i would suggest that for everyone who has Sky Hd and a standard satellite system to stick with it and not change to Sky Q. I know some have changed From HD to Q and regretted it in so far that the ability to take the Sky Q box from home into the van is not possible without installing a Sky Q compatible satellite system.

Indeed, it might make the Very old-mo TypeFellaPerson happy, but not Management and I would get a serious ear bashing.

More yes we have done it and it worked, or we have done it and it did not work, opinions please so I can report that I have the definitive answer. No guesses allowed. :gum:

if its possible to change your own lnb and try it on an OLD sky hd box you may get an answer??

an alternative is to ditch the old hd system completely, change the lnb on the motorhome and take the sqy q box away with you - though i suspect you may want to leave the sky q box at home for those left behind?

not sure about gellynecks post, but it might be worth confirming first as they suggest, just to make sure !

Darloboy also seems to be more informed than i am aswell !! (y) (y)

As above....No it wont work! The Q box has a different code that it sees to the HD box. The HD box will allow the use outside home....The Q box will shut down the card until its been seen back at the address it was sent too!

One other point to note. If you do decide to change to Sky Q it is impossible to change back to Sky HD as Sky will not allow it.

Problems when you switch. We have a Roadpro dome on the van and while they said they were looking into a conversion for Sky Q it still hasn't happened, or hadn't last time we asked so we're limited to the old box in the van. Despite Sky telling me I could watch all the recorded progs on the HD box "for a while" they soon disappeared, even buying a card for it as they suggested fell on deaf ears. We still take our Q box to the Faroes and replaced the LNB when we got there.

I`ve done It?. We got the sky Q box. AND a new card. My old HD box was playing up. Just before the Lockdown. Any way long story short. Couple of weeks ago, booted the SKY H-D mini box (no Hard drive £30 off E-Bay) in the Motorhome up, and did a search on the programme guide until I found a Station that said "insert SKY card". Popped the "Q" card in and the programme came on. (Sweeny Actually) So it does actually work with sky equipment.

I have just removed my sky q card and installed it in a sky hd box. It does work and will access all my paid for channels
You will need to pair the card and this was a prompted sky access.
Same process when re installing card into the sky q box.
Hope this helps

That’s not quite true. You are allowed to swop back under certain scenarios and have reverted back quite a few customers.

Yes I work for Sky as a installations engineer.

The new card will work in HD and Q STBs but every time you swop the card you need to re- activate it via the box if it’s connected to the net or via your account online, but Sky does not recommend it and all card pairing is logged.

If you wish to use Sky Q in a Motorhome yes the LNB needs changing to a wideband but best option is get a smart LNB that does standard and Q that way you have a choice of both worlds.

One other point to note. If you do decide to change to Sky Q it is impossible to change back to Sky HD as Sky will not allow it.

and if you sail too far you will fall off the edge of the world, they told me ....

If your using a stand alone dish say on a tripod etc change the LNB to Hybrid that way you can run both systems.

Easiest way then is to just take your box with you but at home if you have Q and mini boxes the rest of the family watching the minis will not be best pleased as the minis need a connection to the main Q at all times to work.

So make your mind up best option in my mind is keep with HD two boxes one card and pair up when needed.

Can we assume if the card is paired often Sky will take some drastic action? Maybe stop the paid for content

Naaaaa been working for Sky for 12 years and know loads that do it and nothing has ever come back.

At the end of the day the bill gets paid regardless where you watch it.

It's the sheep who obey the rules and the elite who do what they want to do - eh Boris.
If you have a hybrid LNB with both Q and HD boxes connected and switching your Q card back into your HD box and re pairing allows access to previously recorded programmes then why not do it ?

The answer is no.. Not a guess or third hand info..
The Sky card a Q box uses is not compatible with a standard HD box and visa versa

There's an old thread with many contributors on a Digital Spy forum which suggests it can be done via MySky entitled -

Can a Sky Q card be paired to a sky hd box

Yet there are Sky techs on the above thread saying it can be done. There's another Digital Spy thread from earlier this year discussing whether it's possible to revert back to Sky HD plus from Sky Q with four pages of comments including this one:-
'If you still have your existing Sky+HD box and a hybrid LNB (or you are confident enough to change the LNB back to a universal one) you can re-pair the viewing card in your Q box back to a HD box.
I'm not sure if Sky will catch on long term and disable the card but I've done it a few times previously on a temporary basis and it worked'

Made my posts above 2 years ago, where does the time go.

Ps, No longer working for Sky after 13 years, got fed up and moved on.
