Our cooker has one electric plate and three gas burners, when on hook-up the electric plate is first option as the fuel has been paid for. An electric hob seems a sound idea. We also have a Remoska.

I've seen a few single hob cookers as a stand alone unit and I've been very tempted but the downside is sparing the space as it's rare we are on EHU but given more hook ups then I think the space could be afforded.

Yes I carry the single solid plate and use it when on EHU. They are so cheap these days and mine just travels in the piddling little warming oven/grill which I have never used. The only down side is the length of time it takes to warm up and cool down. Great in the awning also.

Solid rings are a very inefficient way of heating a pan but you’ll find them on British vans because 16A is available for no additional charge on many UK sites.

Here's a 1,000 watt hot plate £11.39 delivered on ebay:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MP-Essent...831332?hash=item51e61a4164:g:f0kAAOSwLnBXVsZP

In our last van we carried 2 freestanding electric hotplates: a 500 watt and a 1,500 watt. The smaller one could be used on any hook-up abroad, but we needed to be a bit careful where we used the bigger one. We also had an electric toaster and Remoska, not to mention 2 electric kettles (600 watts and 1,000 watts).

The 500 watt hot plate was obviously quite slow for cooking, whereas the bigger one, once warmed up was very fast.

I reckon for a single one, 1,000 watts is probably a good size, especially if it's to be used on the continent, where typically the hook-up current ratings are lower than the UK.

On a 5-week trip to Spain in 2014, surprisingly, we didn't turn the gas on once during the whole trip - used hook-ups everywhere.

We're a bit tight for space in the new van, so only carry the Remoska for electric cooking these days.

Aldi and Lidl often have the single induction hobs for sale for around £40 or less.

If a hob is for you, and you have pans that are suitable for it, choose an induction hob. Most are controlled by temperature, which may be useful for ensuring that the porridge doesn't boil over, but the better ones allow control of the power consumed, also. One of those would be much more useful where current is restricted. Note that induction pans will be heavier because they contain some iron.

Many foreign hookups are an additional extra charge. You'll find it cheaper to use gas (probably faster, too).
