I'm a newbie
How long would you leave a motorhome on the drive before you feel it would need a turnover of the engine by driving her about 18 miles?

Take mine out once a week, on the essential shopping run, which is approx 12 miles round trip. Probably not really long enough, but better than leaving it standing?
Probably not better than leaving it standing if it is a modern diesel. Clogged DPF and oil dilution are just two problems of repeated short runs.

I'd say every 6 months ?
Based on the fact a year seems too long ?

I took mine for a “run” yesterday and was on a handheld mobile phone plus without a seatbelt the whole time :Eeek:

Really lucky I wasn’t stopped.

The run was around the storage yard and I was talking to the tracking company the whole time as their routine check had thrown up an error. System check and an over the air reset solved the problem.

We should have gone to Spain three weeeks ago, so yesterday was first run out , we went to Sainsburys , very difficult getting down the narrow aisles ( should have pulled the mirrors in) especially the flour section! Any way got our shopping and the MIL's , and back in one piece

I like to take mine out every 4 or 5 weeks, it's been on the drive now for 6 weeks so I will take it on a shopping trip sometime in the next week.

I took mine for a trial run this week , yep works perfectly well..... oh wait , you mean the MH not the Mrs ! My bad ;-)

Mine too stood since October, do you put anything in tank like diesel bug treatment?
I've only got a small amount of fuel in mine and aware that I've probably had condensation in there

We have ours just standing as well, about six weeks since it's had a run. The tank must be almodt full. Can I please ask, what is 'diesel bug treatment'?

It's an additive to reduce the build up of the bug that lives in the condensation that builds up in an empty tank .

We were lucky to be away the weekend before the lock down. There were some steep hills and a bit of motorway so the engine was warmed through. I have moved it across the drive to trim the hedge, empty the cassette and give the hedge side a good wash.
Hopefully we shouldn’t have any problems when we are let out but I think a run on A roads before blasting up the motorway would be a good idea.

I would suggest at least once per week and leave the engine ticking over at the end of your trip to ensure batteries are topped up

We had to visit the Vet and felt guilty doing that. I would love to take the van out and fill up with cheap fuel but being locked away from life, I may have forgotten how to drive the van. I cannot even bring myself to clean it, yet. What is the point I feel, we cannot actually go anywhere.
The Tracker company said we should run the engine about every six weeks, this should prevent them contacting me to check the van is still there.

Thank you for all your replies. We live in a rural area so we took her for a round trip of 18 miles to do a decent shop and we’ve filled her up with diesel. I must say we felt so guilty and thought we needed a sign on her saying WE ARE NOT ON HOLIDAY.

Well, Some are moving?. One passed through the village about 3-30pm to-day, when I was walking the dog. I can see mine getting a run soon, It`s exactly the same as using the Car. And in some ways better as a "self isolating" transport, I could even put the water heater on and wash after shopping too. The short run to the Supermarket is 7 miles each way, but the long route is nearer to 20!.

Yer avin a larf ain't ya.
Last thing you should do is leave it idling, even if it's up to normal temperature, unless you want DPF problems.
Diesels are designed to be under load, not ticking over.

IMV, the only time you leave an engine "ticking over" other than when at (say) traffic lights, is for a short period after a Hard Run, this would be to allow the TURBO to run down properly.

Unfortunately our storage yard at Ebor Leisure is on lock down so don't know when we can get in but never leave a diesel on tickover especially if not up to temp.

Take mine out once a week for a shopping trip, inevitably the Queue at shop is massive so I drive through car park and take long way home... about 20 mile trip.

Depends which engine you run, my Citroen 2ltr euro 6 engine instructions state running the engine for 20mins to regenerate the DPF, but i did say run the engine after shopping trip.

No I have not botherd, when you think about it there are vehicles that lay idle for a year or more when new. There are fuel oil and air filters all of which are there for a reason. As long as I have it serviced once a year I do not mind if it has stood for an extended period.
