Hi all,
While travelling south on the A20 in France this afternoon we saw a small Gendarmes van parked on the slip road, naturally checked the speed was OK in case they had a Zaper in their hands then forgot about it. Pulled into the next Aire for a cup of coffee and saw a similar small Gendarmes van pull in closely followed by a Carrefore hire van. The Police then removed two portable scales from the back of the van and weighed each wheel with the driver and passenger in the vehicle, then got out what was obviously an electronic ticket book and wrote him a ticket then loaded it all back in the van. They looked across at us drinking coffee but didn't approach. Doesn't matter how heavy you are it is still a bit buttock clenching!
Ok it wasn't a Motorhome but they have the technology and are using it.

Oooh errr they are getting clever these frenchie types aren't they. Slowly but surely technology is taking a grip here, they also use drones for speed and distance checks, have undercover "banalise" cars and vans and cameras stashed within the vehicles to catch you faster than light chappies. The little beggers though, a Carrefore vehicle, that's French, it's one thing to pick on you foreigners but we residents ... is nothing sacred these days?

My guess 90% of motorhomes heading south are overweight ..once they cotton on to this they will have a field day.

Weighed our van (again) on our way to the tunnel last week.
Have had some additions since we last had her weighed plus electric bike and other bits.
Well under our 4500kg max, with full fuel, gas and water.
I can rest easy knowing we still have room for the essentials............wine and beer.

Richard.

What you do have to watch out for as well are the motorcyclist Gendarmes they work as a team one stops under a bridge and lays on the bike facing rearwards with the radar gun and the other is around 1-2km down the road waiting for you - wore thing is they dress in Black leathers and no dayglo either and of course instant fine as well

As we saw them for the last few years we know it's a common tactic

the weigh scales are new so thank goodness for our payload is huge

Joke told to me by a member of the Police Nationale some years ago....

"Why do motorcycle Gendarmes ride around in pairs?"

"I don't know..."

"'Cos one can read and the other can write...";)
