Read lots of useful information on the forums regarding pet passports and wondered if members were aware of a petition on the the government web site regarding this. Just needs a few more people to sign.

Welcome John.

Not sure this is a simple decision. Joining or rejoining any EU scheme which provide benefits will come at a cost. The EU will levy a charge on the UK for the benefit. At this stage we have no idea what that cost may be but ultimately it will mean the UK taxpayer paying for those who make use of the scheme (ie all those who don't have a pet and those who don't travel internationally with their pet). The petition does not make this point clear. I agree the costs are too high but believe they should be shouldered by those who make use of the scheme. Just my view.

Hello and welcome.

If you have a pet already consider going down the EU passport route, obtained in Spain or France when on your travels.

We have left the EU , we most certainly shouldn’t be attempting to cherry pick the bits we miss , this is not a political point just a fact of our democratic decision .

So that's it then. We'll never be able to strike up a future agreement with anyone in the EU. Because previous deals must never be re-visited? I think history might prove you wrong on that one.

Hi John47 and welcome to the Fun!

:welc:

There have been a few links to this sort of petition posted on here, and I believe quite a few Funsters have signed them. It would be useful if the petitions could be amalgamated but I don’t know if that’s possible.

A simple solution would be for the UK to be Part 1 listed by the EU instead of Part 2. That way UK-issued pet passports would become valid again. Seeing as we haven’t had a case of rabies for donkey’s years (apart from the odd bat) Part 1 listing would seem to be the most logical. However politics and logic rarely seem to go hand in hand. Maybe we could trade a few fishing licences for a Part 1 listing?

Well let’s hope the eu hierarchy have your same optimism and pragmatism as of yet not looking great :giggle:

It may well do but not in the short to medium term it won’t , in the short term it very much is “ that’s it then “ and that decision will not be ours but very much “ theirs “
I very much hope that in the future the EU will grow up , though history tells us that may not be the case .

I agree, It's a bit soon I think. Things need to settle down. Once most of the major countries have a change of leader and Brexit is not so raw, I'm sure agreements will come. Whether we live to see them though, that is the question. '\

But you could equally argue those seeking to reinstate the scheme unfairly paid a higher price for brexit as they previously had access to the scheme!. Sadly we recently lost our dog his pet passport had just become full on our last trip so it doesn't at the moment affect us but if were only going to make agreements that benefit everyone we'll get nowhere.

So other people should subsidise others hobby’s or past times like owning a pet. Yes I can see that’s fair.

We all do to some extent already. You could argue the reason we like to motorhome in France is because they in effect subsidise us and provide Aires. There's a lot on here who ride motor bikes but we all know that they are more often involved in accidents requiring health spending aren't they being subsidised.

Signed. Wouldn’t it be great if we could get back to the old system of pet passports although, now our electorate has voted to be a third country, I am not holding my breath. I guess if the EU allow us to re-enter the pet passport scheme, they may have to allow other third countries. In the meantime I will definitely be pursuing any opportunity of getting an EU issued passport on our next trip abroad to avoid having to get an AHC every time we travel. Such annoying expense and inconvenience.

Such annoying expense and inconvenience
...for such a minority of UK citizens.
With the best will, it'll never feature high on the politicians radar.

Be thankful that pre EU, taking pets abroad meant six months in a quarantine kennel, and now it's "just" a matter of paperwork & a few quid

That petition was on here a few weeks ago. Not realising, I signed up again only to receive an email saying that I’d already signed it 🤣
Actually we were only able to take pets into the EU in 2000, many years after we joined the EU. Prior to that it was quarantine.

I can't recall the old rules but I thought you could take pets but not being them back. I recall the problem being our government being worried about rabies although at the time it was pretty rare as a cause of death in France.

I think your recollection is more accurate than mine...

I has always been possible to take dogs to Europe but before the PETS scheme was introduced in the early 2000s, 6 months quarantine was required to bring them into the UK. A bit ironic that the country that was a prime mover in getting the scheme set up is now banned from it! Might be a good idea if we reciprocated and made all EU countries a third country and brought back quarantine for all pets without a UK passport.

Oh yes, it was the UK concerned about the possibility of rabies being brought into the country. The problem was that most of us wanted to bring our pets home again! I seem to remember that there was no actual pet passport as such. I remember having to get certificates from a vet for each country that was to be visited. If we were to be a Part 1 country again it would seem all our problems would be sorted.

No!!!! What about all of us who have jumped through all sorts of hoops to get an EU passport? 😱

I guess as nobody does anything for nothing, if you want pet passports who or what are you going to sacrifice in exchange to keep some motorhome owners and their pets happy ? Who ever you sacrifice do you think they are going to be happy ?

We are out of the European Club. We cannot now ask to rejoin bits of it. Brexiteers should be very happy. They have had their blue passport in their hand. Remainders find this a very sad time for all types of reasons

I am sure you would all find a way around it, like getting a UK passport.
I suspect they mean an EU pet passport there are quite a few who have done that to try and get around the animal health certificate. I think we're lucky that the option of an animal health certificate was available it looked for a while like it was going to be even worse.

Well we do it all the time like it or not.

Then there's all the subsidies on the arts not to mention reductions on most council venues for pensioners probably adds up to many times the skatepark costs.
